Mark Twitchell Victim Releases THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
by BWW News Desk - November 09, 2015
On October 3 2008, computer company contractor Gilles Tetreault logged onto a dating website, looking for companionship. There he met what he thought was a pretty, young blonde named Sheena. Aspiring film maker Mark Twitchell, lured Tetreault to a rented garage in south Edmonton by posing as a woman on the dating site. Arriving for his 'date', Gilles was brutally attacked by a man in a hockey mask and after a violent struggle, narrowly escapes with his life. One week later, Johnny Altinger was lured to the same address and attacked in the same manner, only his life ended in what police believe was a ghastly case of life imitating art. Mark Twitchell, the man found guilty of Altinger's murder, was a fan of the hit TV show 'Dexter', a sensationalized depiction of the life of a vigilante serial killer. This fast-paced, first-person, gripping memoir reads like a novel. Revealing details never before made public, Gilles recounts his personal journey of the assault, the highly publicized court case, the resulting media fallout, and life as 'The One Who Got Away.' Gilles Tetreault is a first time author of the book 'The One Who Got Away,' which is based on his personal journey from the assault of convicted murderer, Mark Twitchell. After his incredible ordeal, he has made appearances on Dateline NBC, 48 Hours Mystery, The Fifth Estate, I Survived, Dates from Hell and The Security Brief with Paul Viollis. Gilles is originally from Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan and currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta with his girlfriend Samantha and his son Benjamin. For more information, please visit www.tetreault.org

Holiday Picture Book Wins the 2015 KSRA Award
by BWW News Desk - November 09, 2015
The warmth and wonder of the Christmas season are newly revealed in the imaginative full-color children's Christmas picture book called 'On this Christmas Eve Night' written by Award-winning Author Alicia Lloyd and illustrated by Amy Rottinger. Christmas is a fun, magical time for kids of all ages. It is a holiday to share family traditions and bring loved ones close. 'I just love Christmas,' shares Lloyd. 'I adore this fun, magical time of the year. It is a holiday for all ages, families, and traditions.' In 'On this Christmas Eve Night,' Santa is busy checking his list to make sure he did not miss a single present for the good boys and girls all around the world. However, children are asked the question, 'What does Santa's checklist look like before he speeds over the rooftops on Christmas Eve night?' As readers sit down to find the answer to this question, they learn valuable lessons, traditions from Lloyd's childhood and much more. Children also will find fun activities in the back of the book to add to their holiday traditions, too. 'The magic of Christmas is what makes the holiday atmosphere,' says Lloyd, who still believes in Santa Clause. A lot of what Santa does in the story comes from Alicia's childhood and traditions her family shared with her as a young girl. The activities in the back of the book are easy for children and are still traditions in her home today. 'I wanted to make sure my audience got excited for Christmas while reading this book,' shares Lloyd. Educators will find that this picture book has repetitive learning. Alicia did want to make Christmas fun but in a way that still teaches literacy with holiday sprite. 'This is a fun-filled and warm-hearted Christmas story,' says Halo Publisher Lisa M. Umina. 'Beautifully illustrated, children of all ages will embrace the story and have fun learning about Santa's busiest night of the year. On this Christmas Eve Night is a great addition to any treasured children's book collection.' Alicia's first book, When the Monsters are Quiet, is the winner of the 2015 Keystone to Reading Elementary Book Award. The purpose of the award is to stimulate interest in reading for students from Preschool to Grade 6 and expose them to quality literature. Each year the committee prepares three lists, one for preschool students, one for primary students in grades K-3, and one for intermediate students in grades 4-6. Teachers read the nominated books to their students from the appropriate lists. Last March, the students voted for their favorite book, and the winners are honored at the Book and Author Luncheon at the annual KSRA Conference in October 2015. You can purchase 'On this Christmas Even Night' and 'When the Monsters are Quiet' through Halo Publishing's website (http://halopublishing.com), Amazon, B&N and any local bookstore. Bill Sanner Pens Memoir on Veteran's Life Under the Sea
by BWW News Desk - November 09, 2015
A survey by Blue Star Families found that 90 percent of military members believe the general public doesn't understand the sacrifices made by service members and their families. But one US Navy veteran is determined to change that. These days, Bill Sanner is a Dallas-based computer tech business owner and prolific singer/songwriter, but he's making waves with a new memoir of his years aboard a Navy submarine, the USS H.L. Stimson, during the 1970s. Sanner says, 'Submariners make this place a safer world, but their own world is mysterious, intriguing and interesting, too. While full of fun and lighthearted pleasure, dealing with the angst of leaving loved ones for long periods of time without any communication whatsoever makes for an amazing life.' It's obvious from the title that The Sub-Par Adventures of Snakebite & Stonefinger (the Navy nicknames of Sanner and his best service buddy, Smitty), now available at Amazon.com, is not your standard military bio, filled with epic battles and high-level war strategy. Yet a reviewer for the Stimson Draft submariners' newsletter raved that he 'could not put it down' and declared it a 'must-have.' That's because this moving and hilarious memoir (co-written with Sanner's friend, writer and Eclectus Records recording artist Laura Ainsworth) captures day-to-day military life as experienced by countless young enlistees and their families. The lifelong friendships formed in minutes at boot camp; the pranks ('rig jobs') that make regimented military life bearable; the everyday frustrations with what Sanner calls 'Navy nincompoopery,' and the struggles shared by young sailors and their families, as they cope with separation, loneliness, low pay, even pregnancy and childbirth, while separated by half a planet and the depths of the ocean. Filled with dozens of never-before-published submarine photos and drawings from the 1970s, the book gives the reader a rare behind-the-scenes look at how submarines actually work (did you know they can make their own air?) and how the crews manage to work in cramped quarters and outer space-like isolation for months on end without going crazy 'while serving America in a submerged sewer pipe.' Sanner believes the key is to maintain a sense of humor. Along with family dramas and fascinating tech details, the book offers many laugh-out-loud stories, ranging from 'surfing seagulls' to the night Sanner inadvertently shattered every glass in his barracks with his stereo. But he and his comrades were Christian family men, so Sanner says that unlike Hollywood depictions of military life, 'Our hijinks were good, clean fun. You can safely let your kids read this.' The book has been cheered by the submarine community (Sanner and Ainsworth are already booked for next year's Stimson Reunion in Charleston, South Carolina), but it is also an entertaining and engrossing read for all veterans and military families, as well as those curious about the true-life stories of the extraordinary men and women who protect America and the sacrifices made by those who love them.
