21 KILLERS - Powerful Stories of Anime, Graphic Novels, Reborn in New Novel of Epic Adventure
by BWW News Desk - July 03, 2013
One day while sitting in class, author Kendall Uyeji got the idea of an assassin going around and killing other assassins that all represented something, and a book whose every chapter presents a duel to the death between his assassin and his opponents. He got his inspiration from anime, manga, comic books, children's shows, graphic novels, and from role-playing games he would play with friends. Thus, 21 Killers was born. It is, like the powerful stories of anime and the graphic novels of his youth, a book of desperate heroism, of scientific lore and magic technology, and a company of friends surviving an adventure that takes place in many places - representing a world re-animated into existence by war, in thousand-storey cities, in barren uncontrolled lands and the wild forests of Africa.

Renaissance House Writers Retreat Has July 4 Frederick Douglass Reading at Martha's Vineyard Beach
by BWW News Desk - July 03, 2013
Renaissance House: A Retreat for Writers and Other Artists in historic Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard celebrates July 4th at 4pm with a free pot luck picnic and group reading of Frederick Douglass's famous speech 'What Does The Fourth of July Mean to a Negro?' on the Little Bridge on State Beach in Oak Bluffs. 'The year is 1852, slavery of black people is still in effect. In Rochester, NY, Frederick Douglass is invited to speak about what the fourth of July means for slaves. He is in a bind. He praises the American founding fathers yet, he must condemn slavery,' explained Abigail McGrath, founder of Renaissance House. 'Remember, Douglass had escaped from slavery. In the speech, he tells the audience that they have gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July, but he reminds them, without being bitter, that the nation is young, and, like a young child, it is still impressionable and capable of positive changes.' Fred Collins, a longtime cultural advocate in Oak Bluffs, will start the readings. The program will continue with members from the audience reciting passages from Frederick Douglass' historic speech. The will also be a pot luck dinner, where people are invited to share their favorite dishes. 'Renaissance House is located in Oak Bluffs, an historic black community. It was inspired by cousins Helene Johnson and Dorothy West, writers from the Harlem Renaissance,' said McGrath. 'To celebrate the Fourth of July, it is important for Renaissance House to explore the words of writer Frederick Douglass on his thoughts of this important American holiday.' Renaissance House Retreat provides writers and artists with a subsidized retreat away from life's responsibilities and the space in which to create new works of art. Renaissance House is one of the few retreats designed for issue-oriented writers, writers of color and writers of social justice.' Renaissance House Fellows for 2013 include Afaa Michael Weaver, Pushcart Award-winning poet, playwright and director of the Zora Neale Hurston Literary Center at Simmons College. In addition, Renaissance House holds a weekly salon series that is free to the public and is sponsored by the Helene Johnson and Dorothy West Foundation For Artists In Need. Summerland Publishing Releases 'The Relevance of Reason' by Mack W. Borgen
by BWW News Desk - July 03, 2013
For those who care about the truth and rely on the power of reason, this book delivers hope and a foundation for creating a better future for our country and our people. In an age when political agenda trumps truth, when political one upmanship seems to be more important than the public good, and when the economy is both hostile and unforgiving, having access to the unvarnished facts about our country can make a world of difference. The Relevance of Reason - Business and Politics uses facts to lay the foundation for gaining a true understanding of where we really are. By looking at 'Modern America,' our country from 1957 to the present, and 'Current America,' the country as it is today, we can examine our situation with both context and perspective. Mack Borgen's only agenda is to present a wealth of facts neutrally so people of all political, economic, and philosophical persuasions can engage in thoughtful consideration of what's really wrong and how we might make it right. About the Author: Mack W. Borgen is a native of Montana. He was raised in the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with Honors in Economics and from Harvard Law School. He also served more than four years in the U.S. Army. After living in Europe for a brief period, he began a career simultaneously practicing business law and writing about various economic, political, and social matters. Over the last five years he has devoted much of his time to the writing of a series of books entitled The Chance of a Lifetime, of which The Relevance of Reason is the first in the series. He lives with his wife and son in Santa Barbara, California and Bigfork, Montana. The Relevance of Reason: The Hard Facts and Real Data About the State of Current America - Business and Politics by Mack W. Borgen
