OpenStax and LabArchives Partner to Provide Low Cost Digital... LabArchives today announced a partnership with OpenStax designed to integrate OpenStax’s textbooks with LabArchives’ digital lab notebooks. OpenStax is a nonprofit educational initiative based at Rice University that publishes free, peer-reviewed, openly licensed textbooks used by over 2.2 million students this year. LabArchives, the most used digital lab notebook in classroom and research labs, allows instructors to activate their course content quickly and improve learning outcomes while saving their students and institutions money and time.

LabArchives has more than 285,000 users and is the leading digital lab notebook in the STEM education space. Instructors can now use OpenStax’s free chemistry and biology textbooks inside the LabArchives platforms. At only $20 per student, this combination eliminates the need not only for a printed textbooks and lab manuals, but also for paper lab notebooks. OpenStax textbooks are already being used in 48% of U.S colleges and universities.

This partnership will allow instructors to activate ALL of their course content within the LabArchives platform lecture notes, course resources, textbook content, lab manuals, lab notebooks, group projects and more. LabArchives also integrates with Canvas, Moodle and Blackboard via LTI.

“It’s wonderful to add another great organization to our ecosystem of high-quality resources,” said OpenStax Editor-in-Chief David Harris. “We’ve seen high demand for more lab materials from our community, so we’re delighted to partner with LabArchives to provide an excellent, affordable option for collaborative lab notebook software.”

“We are excited to provide high value via our platform to our customers. The combination of OpenStax course materials to the notebook, instruction and customization capabilities in LabArchives will save students and institutions money and time and provide for better learning outcomes.”

Using OpenStax textbooks within LabArchives will provide for more active collaboration between students, TAs and professors. Students are able to annotate the digital textbook, ask questions on textbook content with the comments feature, link from their work to relevant pages within the textbook, use a powerful search function to find content quickly, collaborate within assigned groups, and more.

Instructors, TAs and students can access student notebooks and textbook content at any time from anywhere on any connected device. Instructors and TAs can monitor student activity within the platform, identify at risk students, grade and return student work, leave comments on work in process, and roll out new course content at any time. In LabArchives, instructors and TAs can monitor the entire lifecycle of the course and students’ progression within it. Everyone saves time and realizes improved course experience and outcomes!
