At the age of 18 months, Ian Stewart's world went quiet. If it hadn't been for his patient and caring teacher, Miss Corbishley, Stewart's life might have remained silent. He now honors Miss Corbishley's memory with his new biography, "Mary S. Corbishley MBE 1905-1995: Mill Hall Oral School for the Deaf, Cuckfield, Sussex" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"It is about the story of 50 years of triumphs, hopes, achievements and struggles of the beloved Mill Hall Oral School for Deaf Children, which encouraged young deaf children to acquire confidence and self-esteem in the hearing world," writes Stewart.

The book provides a rare, in-depth look at an inspiring educator and her successors who helped hundreds of deaf children learn speech and lip-reading. Miss Corbishley challenged misconceptions about deaf people. With God's help, she believed all children, deaf or hearing, had the chance to succeed in life.

An excerpt from "Mary S. Corbishley MBE 1905-1995"

"Mill Hall Oral School for the Deaf came to symbolize what Mary Corbishley had always believed in, which was a permanent school for the education of young deaf children who needed specially-devised oral instruction whereby they were taught speech by phonics and articulation, lipreading, reading and writing English, the four most essential elements of their character, educational and spiritual development in a normal learning environment.

Through Miss Corbishley's encouragement and teaching, Stewart was able to live an active life. He achieved further academic success and worked as a chartered surveyor. In the 1960s and 1970s, Stewart was the leading mime actor with the British Theatre of the Deaf. After an impressive 40-year career, Stewart chose to give to others what Miss Corbishley had given to him: the gift of learning.
