Author Elizabeth H. Brett might have been thinking aloud and blurted, "I could have written that," having read Bel Kaufman's "Up the Down Staircase." And indeed she mustered the ideas that cling to her as an educator in her book "So You Want to Be a Teacher?" which accounts her ups and downs in the teaching profession that have made her a solid rock aspiring teachers must look up to.

The indispensability of education has been upheld by every person that stood as part and parcel of the education system. As a mentor to the young minds, Brett understands that the responsibility she had been carrying comes with a payback that no financial or statutory things could top. Sailing in the sea of teaching and seeing a sea of faces that came and went - especially students who had made a marked difference in both good and bad light - requires for anyone who ventures into teaching a certain level of mastery and getting-used-to.

Countless were the lives touched by the toil and hard work she has exerted in all days of work. Brett supports the philosophy that learners must catch up with the fast-paced world so no one is left behind. She believes her book appeals to teachers, to college presidents and even to a baby in arms. She had stressed academics, integrity and love in all her teachings having spent two scores of her life within the periphery of the educational system in America.

By publishing this book, Brett will not only make her former students and colleague chuckle in remembrance of the moments they shared as important parties in the educational sphere but will also affect students beyond races, generations and culture. In so doing, she is affecting eternity.
