In "A Radical Change of Direction: Memoir of the Spiritual Journey of a Surgeon" (published by WestBow Press), author Donald C. Mullen, MD, MDiv, FACS, describes his journey throughout the world as a cardiac surgeon that helped shape his spiritual beliefs.

Mullen explains that he was inspired by "Numerous experiences in developing country medical work over the last 30 years which changed my thinking theologically and politically."

Mullen's story is meant to provide wisdom and motivation to encourage others on life's journey and give an understanding of beneficial life principles.

An excerpt from "A Radical Change of Direction":
We had just come to Malawi as our first assignment with the Presbyterian Church (USA) when a mother brought her three week old, premature, four pound, dehydrated and moribund little boy into the hospital with intestinal obstruction and a remarkably distended abdomen. The child had a strangulated inguinal hernia which required emergency repair and bowel resection for a gangrenous small bowel. After surgery and careful fluid balance, the tiny baby recovered was discharged after a week, and was seen three weeks later in the clinic doing well. If we had not been there for this simple procedure, the child would have died. We had many patients like that during the months we were in Malawi.
