Is it wrong that I'm hoping for Rent's grosses to decline, even though I'm a fan? (Don't answer that.) It's run its course and then some.

siamesedream - i feel the same way, it's just obvious that it's not in it's "hay day" anymore, and it either needs to be refreshed somehow, or it should close. But Grease should close first.

I really didn't think this week was that bad. "Legally Blonde" and "Xanadu" aren't looking very good though. And lord, almighty, "Grinch" was at like 55%? I know it's not really the Christmas season anymore, but good lord.
But RENT didn't drop too much! Woo hoo! I hope they are starting to rally a bit.

REnt does not need to be closed! And the only refreshing it needs is maybe some less tired actors on stage. But do not do anything dumb like changing the set, lighting, blocking, orchestrations or anything like that! grrrrrrr!

I hate to say it, but I agree that Rent has run its course.

rent just needs some TLC it has not in any way run its course.......there is about to be a huge burst of 90's nostalgia in the country just watch and when it hits, RENT will be there to cash in.

If shows aren't doing too good (Legally Blonde, Xanadu, Rent, what have you), can they close them before the actors' contracts are up? Or do they NEED to wait, then announce a date? I've been wondering lately, but I'm usually not "involved" enough in Broadway to keep track of these things.

Not that I think these shows are closing. Just speaking generally. I do like to see Mamma Mia and Phantom doing so well after so long, but I guess that's to be expected.

Shows can definitely close before an actor's contract is up. The producers have to give proper notice (2 weeks I think) to the actor's though.

Regardless of contracts, under Equity rules, a producer can close any show with one week's notice. And once a show closes, no actor (or musician or any one else) continues to get paid regardless of how long his contract was (his contract is void as of closing).

How about a show that closes after a few days of previews a la CARRIE?

78% for Legally Blonde? In that BARN of a giant theatre in January? Come on now. That's 13% UP from early December. Maybe you guys should think before posting.

Yes, it's difficult to understand why anyone would be bemoaning the gross of Legally Blonde, especially while blithely ignoring the much more problematic gross of Curtains.

If a producer closes a show with less than a week's notice, then I believe he has to pay an extra week's salary to the cast as a penalty.

When I saw this thread, I thought that I was going to look at the grosses and see dismal numbers for LB. The Palace is a huge theatre and it was at 78 percent...not a great week, but overall, not terrible, especially considering this week marks the start of the slow season for Broadway. Rent and Xanadu however....small theatres and they aren't filling them....

Yeah, BLONDE did well over their nut, and better than most shows.
Untill SHREK or another show wants the Palace, they have a home.

i'm confused.

how did grease not noticeably drop in average ticket price OR attendance, and yet take such a huge dip in grosses?

HOW, I ASK YOU?
