There's a list on spinner.com for the best opening lyrics of a song - though of course they only cover pop music.

What are OUR best opening lyrics from a song?

Some of the first choices that came to mind:

--Kiss today goodbye
--Isn't it rich?
--I wonder what he'll think of me
--Come on, babe, why don't we paint the town?
--What good is sitting alone in your room
--Seems a downright shame...

"It says here..." Adelaide's Lament, Guys and Dolls

"Don't kiss me good bye again, leave this night clean and quiet..." Goodbye Until Tomorrow, Last 5 Years

"Now she wants to know WHY, if I'm so fabulous, I would WANT to take care of her child.....I answer with as much filigree and insouciance as I can muster, trying to slightly cock my head like Snow White listening to the animals. She, in turn, is aiming for more of a Diane-Sawyer-pose, looking for answers which will confirm that I am not there to steal her husband, jewelry, friends, or child. In that order." The Nanny Diaries

"I'd like to propose a toast"
"There's a moment you know..."

Will get more as I think of them.

The one that sprang in my head first was "No canary in a cage for me! - TMM, Forget About the Boy

Oh, and is "Here she is, boys! Here she is, world! It's Rose!" considered part of Rose's Turn?

"Most people live on a lonely island..." - "Bali Ha'i" - SP

and if I can add one of my favorite LAST lines--

"Oh, I'm no one's wife, but, oh, I love my life, and all that jazz.."

In my book, no one can write a better opening lyric than William Finn...

"Four Jews in a room bitching..."

"Homosexuals, women with children,
Short insomniacs, and a teeny-tiny band..."

A couple more I thought of:

"I'm breaking my mother's heart"
"I see his face, I hear his hearbeat"
"Maybe the sun gave me the power"
"I have often walked down this street before"
"Damn, damn, damn, damn"
