People LOVED it here. There was alot of clapping and laughing and generall overall cheering. There was one guy who was being disruptive at the beginning shouting evil, nasty things; but seeing as i work at the theatre i was at I just got three of the managers and they threw him out.

Rosie mentioned in a comment that she was going to see Hairspray yesterday.

Then someone asked her:

I saw Hair Spray with my 8 son…WoW
I will see it again and again!
Did your kids like it?

they did

Rosie- woman of few words (on blogs).

Someone want to ask her - what SHE thought?

yeah rosie did see hairspray in a full house movie theatre and i was working then. she was nice, kind, and all. i walked by her but i just said hi and i didnt want to ask her anything because i didnt want her to get mobbed or anything like that. It was nice to see her go and see a movie with her family, i just wanted her to go on her way in a nice way. many people saw her but didnt make a big deal of it until she left.

O.T. Last night I had a dream that after Hairspray my little brother was like "what's a negro?" really loudly outside the theatre and I was like: "Sammy, don't say that! Devil child! Devil child!"

Absolutely sold out at the 1:30pm show at The Sherman Oakes Galleria 16 in Los Angeles on Saturday. The audience loved it. And everyone recognized the cameos - Waters and Shaimen especially. Big laughs for Jerry Stiller.

mattt: Seems like you had a similar experience to me, I went to the afternoon showing at our cinema (in the south of England) and it was about 1/4 full, there was me, a few other people who I could tell wanted to see the film, and lots of teenagers who I think were just there because it was a new film, they knew nothing about it.
There was a group of boys throwing things (i couldn't tell who) and eventually threw a bottle at me, I left and reported it but the staff couldn't find them - I didn't think they would. (this was after the boys talking through most of the film)

I was surprised that these kind of people would even go to a film of a Broadway musical, I didn't expect it to be busy - Hairspray hasn't even made it to the West End yet - but I didn't expect that.

I will hopefully go again on Monday, with a nicer audience and see the whole film.

I thought it was rather bland. I would much rather see the stage version again with the original plot.

Sorry...it's the honest truth.

When I saw it, the theater was probably 75% full. They roarously laughed at the right moments, and clapped a few times at the right moments when clapping was deserved, some people were even dancing in their seats, it was a lot of fun. I ALWAYS enjoy a movie more when other people are enjoying it.

my theater was about 80% full and everyone was pretty quiet through most it if. There were a few times, when a few teenage girls started singing along, and people imitated John Travolta's accent, etc. But, they laughed in the right places (my wife did a HUGE blurt out laugh at one point) and they all seemed to love it. And the end, people clapped as well. I, personally, LOVED it.

We'll be staying in Times Square staring Tuesday for our Theatre Trip, and thought it might be fun to see this with a NY audience, any suggestions as to what would be a good theatre for Hairspray?

Thanks!

The Loews Lincoln Square 13 is nice. It's between 68th and 67th on Broadway and has a really nice mezzanine.

Although, I should warn you the movie itself is a real letdown. You may be better off seeing another broadway play/musical. Perhaps Frost/Nixon, Grey Gardens, or 110 in the Shade-- you know you can get discount tickets.

I'm off to a 12:20p showing today in DC. I'm curious to see how full the theater is this early in the day. I'm also making sure I get a seat where I won't be disturbed watching the credits at the end of the movie.

Side note - I can't get, "New Girl in Town" out of my head!!

Thank you Ben! We thought we'd go to the movie during the day when we don't have a live theatre opportunity! Thanks for the info about the Lowes!

I went opening night, so it was pretty crowded. And the crowd seemed to LOVE it. They laughed a lot and cheered when it was over. In fact, during the end credits, when Nikki Blonsky's name appeared, the whole theatre burst into another round of applause. It was cool - like seeing a curtain call in a movie theatre.

All of my friends loved it too, and were happy I made them go with me.

Saw a 2:00 matinee in Baltimore today and I am guessing the theater was about 70-80% full. Everyone clapped at the end but the biggest comments/laughs were the direct references to Baltimore (North Avenue, Patterson Park, that aweful word "hon" etc.) John Waters as the flasher was also a big laugh/pointing at the screen moment.

My entire family loved it. My mother had one "comment"...if that...being that it appeared as though Tracy had a french manicure in the film and according to my Mom, no one had them in Baltimore in the 60's...she'd know!

I've now seen the movie three times.

Last night at 8:00, the audience was pretty full, apparently almost sold out, if not. They applauded when Link said "Kiss my ass" and when Lil Inez won Miss Teenage Hairspray. They laughed hysterically. My friend was in love with James Marsden and Zac Efron. I got a foam Tracy wig after the movie from the girl at the concession counter, it's really cool. :)

Today at 5:00, they were laughing at John and his crazy dance moves, Alison Janney and her devil child and Amanda Bynes being all adorable. My friend fell for Elijah and almost cried during I KNOW WHERE I'VE BEEN. The audience was like 1/2 full. The guy in front of me loved it. He laughed at like everything. And at the end credits, a little girl was dancing.

I saw it today at the 10am showing at The Loews Lincoln Square 13, in NYC in the large theatre with the loge. There were exactly 12 of us in the entire theatre, but we certainly had a great time.

My only complaint was that Zac doesnt have much charisma, and was the weakest of the dancers. Elijah is the breakout star and we'll see him in many more films-talk about charisma.

James Marsden was also fantastic. Is he married, girlfriend, etc? You never see him attached to anyone. Delicious.

I just got back from seeing it. There were no real like bursts of applause, but you could feel the energy at the start of Good Morning Baltimore, and I looked around during You Can't Stop the Beat and everyone was mouthing the lyrics. And one more thing, since it amused me. You could hear everyone gasp when Zac Efron said, "Kiss my ass."

I saw a 7 PM showing, and the theatre was about 1/4 full. They seemed to enjoy it, with some scattered laughs and little applause at the end.

I saw the movie yesterday in Atlanta, GA and again today in Chattanooga, TN and at both showings, the audience absolutely loved it - erupting in applause and cheers at the end. People were even dancing up the aisles on their way out of the theater in Atlanta.

Oh I'm so excited to answer this question because I have been part of two great, but very different crowds so far.

First the 12:05am showing Thursday at the Zigfeld (s?) in NYC. There was about 225 people there I'd say and I think every single one has seen the show multiple times. I had seen it for the 7th time just hours earlier. There was an applause before it started, after every song, and at the end obviously. After every funny line you could tell people were laughing at the "newness" of it. Everyone was taking in this new interpretation of one of their favorite musicals. I would say it was a very well educated Hairspray audience.

Tonight, I saw it at home in Northern, Va. The theater was packed! It was packed with people who had never seen Hairspray before. I'd probably be over estimating saying that 5% of the audience had seen it on Braodway. Every line and every song was fresh to them! It was funny because I know these the songs and script like the back of my hand, but it was great to them for the first time. After about half way through they started clapping after songs and dancing in there seats. They loved John and they LOVED Zac! After anything Link would say or any look he'd give to the camera there would be awws and sighs. I'm proudly guilty of participating. Even grown women were swooning. haha. I'm thinking, "Damn! Link Larkin has now stolen the hearts of America, not just a select few. They're stealing my man!"
