Here's hoping Lauren Kennedy is cast as Nellie. She was smashing in London a few seasons ago. She was so natural in it that it felt as if the role was written for her.
Could you post selected excerpts from the article? Does it talk about a design team? Oh man if Michael Yeargan is behind the sets that would be amazing. Just imagining what he would do with the island setting makes me drool.
However, fingers crossed, at about the same time Lauren Kennedy may be appearing with Jarrod Emick (as F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald) on Broadway in the wonderful "Waiting for the Moon".
DeBecque has to be white and French or the story makes no sense. This is one show that non-traditional casting would destroy. It will only make its excellent point about racism if the casting is "traditional."
Reba wanted to do Nelly years ago. I'm thinkin' she's too old for it now... but I'm also thinkin' I don't care. Get her on the phone!!!!

There are many previous discussions on the topic of a SOUTH PACIFIC revival on Broadway.
Here's one.
While a search of the words "South Pacific" will bring up many various threads using the words, "south" and "pacific." If you scroll the list you'll find many other threads on this topic with lots of thoughtful comments from many posters, some of whom are still around.
Yeah, there were many earlier ones. I remember going into a "rant" myself about the racial casting and how important it is to the plot and point of this show. But that was another thread entirely as well (somewhere in here).

This is one of those cases where it simply makes more sense to discuss it in a new thread Jose'. I am sure there are great insights to be gained from the old threads though, that may be worth analuzing farther. It is "new" news after all.
Although I think Brian Stokes Mitchell would be brilliant, the racism issue is a bit of a problem I think it would be best to cast someone else. (although honestly he looks more "European" than African American anyway.)
I agree that Mitchell, because of his physical characteristics and coloring, could play multiple races easily... our "perception" of him as a man is that of African-American. We love to slap labels on people, don't we? Particularly in America. But he's an ACTOR, by trade, and that's a shame... and it's limiting.
Take someone like Ben Kingsley... who is able to play many races convincingly without any audience backlash. He's one of the lucky ones, though. We see him as White, Indian, Asian, Jewish, Middle Eastern, etc. And in today's PC world, that's saying quite a lot.

They could make it where Emile is trying to pass for white - it could be just like IMITATION OF LIFE! Or PINKY! Lets call up Susan Kohner and Lena Horne!
