I just realized this. Danya Taymor is directing The Outsiders. It’s the best reviewed musical (from out of town) coming in this spring.  Is she any good at directing? I didn’t see Pass Over.

It's certainly under the radar.

Danya Taymor is certainly better than her other nepo contemporaries. She doesn’t just “create a mood” like Sammi Cannold, for example. Passover was incredible, but IDK if I should credit that to mostly the actors and script, her direction, or a bit of both. A lot of the blocking was simple yet effective, and she definitely knew her audience. She’s obviously not a Black man in America, which is what the show was about, but I think she’s probably an empathetic person because I found myself relating to the characters in different ways.

She's worked on other shows here in Chicago and they have mostly been exceptional.

Her molding of Pass Over was essential to its success. It's true that the blocking was simple but the script itself was quite abstract and repetitious and her productions both felt propulsive and essential. Her work on "Daddy" was also quite excellent, even if the script was a little unwieldy and perhaps not ready for prime time.

She is considerably above her nepo-contemporaries.

Right, because we are all destined to be exact copies of our aunts. This is known.

If you want to see her work right now, it is on display in Jonah, in the Roundabout Pels space. And it would be well worth your time no matter who had directed it.

I'm thinking – and this is just a guess – that it was the "hacks" comment.

It's called a joke, albeit one you apparently didn't find funny, which is fine. I'm well aware she's not an exact copy of her aunt. It's okay.

“I'm thinking – and this is just a guess – that it was the "hacks" comment.”

There was more than one comment deleted.

Regardless, why would that be deleted? It’s a description of someone’s work. Her parents do unoriginal and uninspired work, I don’t know them personally. I’d imagine they’re lovely people. Can we not criticize peoples artistic output? We can’t say an artist is a hack? It’s the opposite of innovative. It’s a description of work, not a personal attack. Can we not say someone has a poor singing technique? An actor doesn’t take risks?

It’s whatever but so weird.

Not exactly on the topic of Danya Taymor, but does anyone know what ever happened to Liesl Tommy’s involvement with this show. Liesl was initially announced as the director for when the show was going to premiere in Chicago in 2020; obviously that didn’t come to fruition.

If your aunt was a comedian we wouldn’t be having this misunderstanding.

mom is a Broadway director, dad produced dirty dancing. You can even search the 6Million dollar mansion he was selling. They wrote an article about it lol. I missed what the deleted comments all said, but if they were talking about Ms. Cannold, she is not a hack, but if she didn’t have famous parents, she’d probably be directing staged readings in the village. She’s still GOOD but definitely not great.

In the world of a Barbie monologue , why… why… ? This industry is such against the thing they seem to crave and demand . Both of these individuals have worked tirelessly regardless of their background. It’s a catch 22 for them both. Heaven forbid they had the natural talent to pursue their dream… and SK’s Sunset B was beyond. No one likes a concept but the vision was realized like no other. . I’ve seen her Evita, Pearl, etc and find it bashing for you to write this- it’s against the direction this family / community is moving towards.

In what universe did that production of Sunset Blvd have a vision. Was downright amateur, even in its semi staged form.

Whenever I used the word “she” my Mom would say Who's 'she', the cat's mother?

This is what I thought of after reading this thread’s title.  I wish this thread’s title was just changed to include Danya’s name out of respect.

Having now seen a number of Cannold’s productions, she strikes me as a director who was given prominent gigs far before she was ready to fully handle them. And that is not something that really happens much to young directors, who often work for many years as assistants and tackling much smaller scale work before even getting the chance to be considered for huge work.

This is basically the only thing that spurs the moderators into action on this board these days.

When the response to the joke is funnier than the joke, the joke has fallen flat.
