"I've told [executive producers] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] and Dan [Palladino], 'If you guys do a Maisel musical, I'm there in a heartbeat,'" says Borstein. "If they were to do The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Broadway, I would jump at the chance. The show itself without a stitch of music feels like a musical. Every time Midge [Rachel Brosnahan] gets up and does stand-up, it's almost like a musical number. It's like breaking away for a moment but instead of song, it's comedy. It really feels like it has the shape of that in its bones.

"I would love to do it, but only if I could play Midge," Borstein continues, joking, before adding. "No, I would absolutely do it because I know my character would have like all the belt-y songs."

As for Rachel Brosnahan, while she'd love to see Maisel become a musical, she is certain her vocal abilities wouldn't be up to snuff. "Alex would have the best songs," she adds. "Laura Benanti would have to play me. I can't sing."

Borstein interjects, "You can sing. I've heard you sing."

"I can sing a little bit," Brosnahan demurs. "But not enough to sing Mrs. Maisel the musical."

As for who Borstein would like to play Susie if she isn't available? That's easy. "Danny DeVito," she deadpans. "I mean, the wardrobe's gonna fit."

They'd need someone to write some killer songs for it. The show often does feel like a musical, but one of its greatest strengths, IMO, is the brilliant use of songs from the period. The standard of songwriting would have to be high to live up to that. (Unless they wanted to make it a jukebox musical ... )

Likely writers: Shaiman and Wittman. Best writers: Tesori and Lindsay-Abaire.

I think a Maisel musical is a horrible idea... that being said, a Maisel play starring Lea Michele? I'd be there every night.

They/them. "Get up the nerve to be all you deserve to be."

Hasn't Tesori done work on Maisel?

I had to go back and see who's written original songs for the show. Tom Mizer and Curtis Moore are the regular songwriters. They did some of the Shy Baldwin songs, which were really good and had that period feel.

As long as they cast actual Jewish people, I'm interested.

Now that’s perfect casting. As Rachel proved with her flawless Midge, religion in your own life has nothing to do with your character’s. It’s called acting for a reason.

Personally not a huge fan of the show but this would be interesting.

The show's biggest issue is that Maisel is an awful person, but the show itself is mostly a frothy sitcom that's been dragged out over five fairly repetitive seasons so she never really learns anything. Compressing her arc into a single evening would help a lot - if they're able to capture the taut, thrilling tone of the first season and cap it with a satisfying conclusion, it could be a winner.

It could also just be a play, but I'm always happy to welcome a new musical.

Laura Benanti as Mrs. Maisel is flawless casting.

Since the most recent episode dropped, honestly, this is starting to look more likely to me. Between ep. 4's industrial musical, which they showed TWICE (well, more like 1 1/3 times, to be fair), and the musical from the "Gilmore Girls" revival, I'm starting to believe that the Palladinos really, really want to do a full-length stage musical.

I'm honestly surprised no one has asked them yet. They're openly major theatre fans and they've produced work. I mean she was gonna remake Gypsy. They'd write something truly original to them, I'm sure.

As of the last report, when the Streisand Gypsy fell through, Amy picked up the option to create a remake in general. I honestly thought all the Gypsy music in last season's trailers was either a clue as to the next Sherman-Palladino project or a sign that some loose variation on the plot would slowly be infused into the show. All that to say, a musical being the next project or the one they're gearing up for wouldn't surprise me.

Fun Fact that people may not be aware of: Not everything needs a stage adaptation. Shocking, I know. When will people realize that??

On the night when they all descended on the Broadway theater to see the musical written by their Catskills Music Director, they surprised me by using as incidental music two songs from the Rodgers and Hammerstein flop Pipe Dreams. One of the songs was the incredibly catchy “Sweet Thursday” that I can’t believe no one has ever put to good use somewhere. Maybe they got clued onto the music from watching the Encore’s presentation of Pipe Dreams.
