What Next For The Majestic?

If indeed anything!

1, Is the current production of The Phantom of the Opera going to extend again?

2, is the new re-tooled production going to go in?

If 1 & 2 above are not going to happen then a new show will go in?

If 2 & 3 above are going to happen, then the Majestic will go through a much needed refurbishment?

Nothing has been announced apart from the Phantom will close in April.

What’s most likely going to happen will be that the theatre will undergo a massive renovation/restoration project as it hasn’t had one since the 80s. Then, they need to rename it after Hal Prince! We’ve waited too long! It’s finally time for a Broadway theatre to be named after that legend!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

While it hasn't been announced yet, it's pretty much a sure thing that the Majestic is being renovated next. There hasn't been major work done there since the 80s and it could use a refresh.

Most likely that will be announced on closing night.
(I'd like them to call it The Majestic Prince)

In a recent interview, Charolette St. Martin said it is going to be renovated. I'm assuming we won't get a new production until at least Spring, 2024.

I was waiting in line this morning to grab tickets to Welch's last scheduled Christine show tonight, and some workers in Shubert jackets were taking a look at the paint and stone that make up the front of the theater. Some kind of a facelift at least seems pretty likely.

Full renovation of the theatre, and then THE WIZ goes in.

It would be an absolute travesty if the Majestic is not renamed the Prince.

Nope.  THE WIZ is produced by ATG, so they're taking an ATG/Jujamcyn house.

I’ve heard from several people that the theater is being renovated for the West End Cabaret revival to come in.

The Majestic was covered in scaffolding for most of the pandemic and had about 6 or 7 construction work orders posted to the lobby windows about all the renovation work being done to the exterior. However, all of that black exterior paint will still have to come off.

Hopefully new seats and carpeting too. I’m guessing the seat cushion fabric is the same one from the 80s?

I thought it was going to the Hudson. The Majestic is too big for an intimate revival like that.

Last I heard Merrily still had dibs on The Hudson, unless something has changed recently

I'm wondering if the Jujamcyn acquisition by AEG could change that. The Hudson made sense when they only had 1 house, with 6, I could see Merrily going to a larger theatre.

I had heard something about Merrily going into the August Wilson post Funny Girl.

This would make sense from a timing perspective.

So do we think that the Phantom will haunt Broadway for the last time in April? With such strong box office, it’s grossing more than Hamilton, do you think it could get a final extension until Labor Day?

Will the new production come in at a different theatre, if at all, or will re-open the Majestic after a lick of paint?

CamMack is on record as saying the only reason Phantom is selling well is because it's closing so if it keeps getting it extended there will be a drop off at some point. Besides, the entire reason to close the show is to cut the royalties to Prince and the original deceased original creatives ASAP.

The new production can come in and be called the Brilliant Original at a smaller theater. When this whole "downsize Phantom" drama started, which was even before the pandemic and the London closing, wasn't the original rumor that the show would move to the Broadhurst in a cheaper format?

That would be perhaps one of the strangest moves ever unless they're planning on ripping everything out and building their own theatre structure within the theatre, which seems just so strange and not worth it.

This production has 550 seats on the West End... I just have such a hard time imagining how it would even work...

The Hudson really would be perfect for this show with it's large lobby, bar, and lounge spaces.

I know they JUST renovated it, but the Jones could work well for it too with it's whole addition. Is there anywhere else where they could buy a space right next to the theatre and create an addition like that to use for Cabaret and then also have for afterwards?

Renovation. It’s gonna be named “The Hal Prince Theater” and Evita will open in March/April 2024

Seems kind of a bitch move to rename the theater after Prince. Strip him of any royalties and then mount a new production of a show he made a success.
