Josh hinted on “The View” yesterday that he would be returning to their “neck of the woods” soon.  I assume this means a Broadway return.  Any rumors swirling around his return?

Maybe The Thanksgiving play?

It wasn't hinted at, he explicitly said it.

With all of the Sondheim revivals, is that FORUM revival on the horizon?

I heard some rumors (although I think they were more hopeful speculation than actual rumors) that there would be a revival with Alex Brightman at some point. I would honestly prefer that to one with Josh Gad, I think.

Alex Brightman would be a brilliant Pseudolus, but I doubt he would sell well enough to justify the expense of a Broadway revival. I also wonder how the gender politics of that show would work nowadays, and perhaps would be better served by a less-literal production (such as the all-male version that Jessica Stone directed at a few regionals, or an all-female/nonbinary version).

FORUM could actually be a good candidate for a commercial Off-Broadway revival akin to LITTLE SHOP.

Alex Brightman in FORUM with Will Blum as his standby. 🤣

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Or ...Gad and Rannells have also spoken about staring in a revival of “The Producers.” “I’ve even toyed with the idea of going back into ‘The Book of Mormon’ for a stint,” says Gad of the show that earned him a Tony nomination.

That would be unbearable to sit through.

Agree that Brightman would be terrific, and I’m sure he’d sell a respectable block of tickets based on his stints in (and fan bases from) School of Rock and Beetlejuice. However, sounds like he’s planning on taking a break from performing onstage (a pity) to focus on his writing projects, based on an interview with Times shortly before Beetlejuice closed. I suspect based on his commitment to his shows and the manic energy he brings to his performances, he’s probably physically and mentally spent.

Yeah, absolutely. I hope he takes some time to recover, and perhaps comes back in something a bit more low-key. Someone brought up the off-Broadway Little Shop, and I would actually love to see Alex do a stint as Seymour in that.

I like Josh Gad, but I find he works best in small doses, and I'm not sure there are many lead roles I'm dying to see him in.

I’ll join the Alex as Seymour fan club! Can’t wait to see both Alex and Josh on stage again!

A great suggestion - a clean shaven Alex still has the baby face perfect for Seymour!

I’ve always kind of hoped he’d take a whack at crafting a cabaret show. He’s got a crazy good voice for rocking out, but also a perfectly lovely one for quieter ballads, which he hasn’t gotten much of a chance to showcase in his last two outings. The right mix of tunes, coupled with his sense of humor and career stories (thus far) would give his fans a chance to see him in a uniquely new (but familiar) way.

This seems a lot more likely than him doing FORUM. As for going back into MORMON, I don't think he could handle the physical nature of the role now.

Just remembered –– Is TAMMY FAYE eyeing Broadway with Rannells? That currently seems like the most likely new Elton John musical, over DWP.

I actually think Forum is more likely, given all the rumors/attempts at a revival over the past few years.  They're both due to be revived in my opinion, but I'd say Forum more than Producers.  I also don't think Gad and Rannells would be good casting for the Producers - I'm genuinely not sure who would play which role.  Both options feel wrong.

I just don’t believe that someone with either a commercial or artistic mindset would mount a whole production of Forum around Josh Gad on Broadway. Surely there would be better choices for the role (and I don’t mind Josh Gad!).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I think Gad fits Max fine enough, it’s Rannells that absolutely doesn’t fit Leo, imo. At least not without a director that’s going to coax a different type of performance out of him. I’d rather see someone like Michael Urie or Daniel Breaker.

Gad would be Bialystock and Rannels would be Bloom

How about one of those Kennedy Center concerts of THE PRODUCERS with James Monroe Iglehart as Max, Ethan Slater as Leo? And Bertie Carvel or Brooks Ashmanskas (or...Billy Eichner?) as Roger.

I don't really see that show getting revived on Bway in Nathan's lifetime –– unless Nathan himself wants to do it, as was rumored and debunked right after the pandemic.
