Kate Baldwin to play Dorothy Brock and Max von Essen as Julien Marsh. Very excited and looking forward to this. Randy Skinner directs. Sept.16 - Nov. 6.
I've never seen anything there, but my BF loves tap and he's seen the London production that's on Blu-Ray. Do we think this would be worth the two hour drive to check it out? I am a Kate Baldwin fan...
Usually Goodspeed productions are top notch. I drove 2.5 hours earlier this year to see Kate in Bridges at the Axelrod in South Jersey and it was well worth the trip. A 2022 highlight for me. I have never seen 42nd Street but I saw Skinner’s Dames at Sea and Cheek To Cheek: Irving Berlin In Hollywood 2021 and loved both. Goodspeed is so beautiful as it picturesquely sits on the bank of the Connecticut river. Make a day of it. We love to go for delicious pizza at Otto in Chester. I booked for Halloween weekend so hopefully we will see Autumn colors.

Thanks for your reply. I also saw Kate in Bridges earlier this year and thought she was wonderful. I saw the revival of 42nd Street on Broadway and Dames at Sea - and enjoyed them both.
I think I'll take the chance and do as you say and make a day of it. Thanks again!

Hope you enjoy! I'm still contemplating whether to make the trip to the Bucks County Playhouse for Dames at Sea August 12- Sept 11th. That is a bit harder for me to get to so I will see. It is difficult to pass on seeing Lesli Margherita reprise her role as Mona Kent.
"I am very pleased to create a new version of the classic musical 42nd Street with the full cooperation and support of the estates. It will definitely be the musical that audiences have loved for 42 years but will have new elements and surprises. Before Mark Bramble's untimely death in 2019, he made changes to the book that restored some ideas he and Michael Stewart had originally conceived for the 1980 production. Mark was very excited to include these in the next production and I'm enthusiastic about this opportunity to do so at Goodspeed. It's the perfect venue for this new production.""
No further details about what these changes will be. I have always wanted the stage production to adopt more of Julian Marsh's character from the movie: he is dying and needs this show to be his last big hurrah. (Which is not unlike Gower's situation in 1980.) It would give the show much better stakes. The book is terrible, and the show has become more overblown over the years, so I would welcome this smaller-scale version.
Yeah I am very curious what the book changes are. I’m fond of 42nd Street, but the character of Julian Marsh has not aged well at all, especially after all the Scott Rudun stuff.
Hearing reports they're eyeing a Broadway transfer for the Spring. Anyone else have info?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I've heard talk of a revival eyeing Broadway, is it the Goodspeed production? I'd be curious to see if this cast transfers, it's got a wonderful group of beloved Broadway performers but no box office draws. I guess the show and spectacle can be the draw itself!
"I saw Pavarotti play Rodolfo on stage and with his girth I thought he was about to eat the whole table at the Cafe Momus." - Dollypop
I had forgotten that Goodspeed did 42nd Street back in 2009. Here's a clip of that production to give and idea of the space limitations. 42nd Street at Goodspeed
A transfer of the Goodspeed production would not mean much spectacle. That’s a tiny venue.
Previously there had been talks of the London production and also the all-Black production (choreo by Jared Grimes) both eying Broadway, with the late Mark Bramble preferring his own London revival. I loathe the London production, and is basically a retread of the 2001 revival, so I hope it will be something else.

To those who saw the '09 production at Goodspeed, how much did you miss the loss of spectacle?
Kind of wish Randy Skinner would step back from this show. Even if he did the choreo alongside a new director. I don't see the changes being that significant with him remaining at the helm. He's a great choreographer but a perfunctory director.
The commercial producer behind this run is not a person with a track record as a lead producer, so I'll believe a Broadway transfer when it actually gets announced.
Does anyone know if the actors typically wear body mics at Goodspeed?

They don't.

I had been wondering that as well, but based on one of the articles someone posted in this thread, it doesn’t look like any actual changes have been made. Max Von Essen is still evidently saying the same sexist, abusive stuff Julian Marsh has always said, but he says it all very sweetly, and he’s so handsome and charming he gets away with it I guess? Haha. Seriously though, I showed the London production on BroadwayHD to my students last year. I hadn’t seen it in twenty years and was shocked by how gross the character comes across in 2022. It seems almost unproductable now, especially since no one under the age of 70 has any basis of reference for the time period and that style of musical theater. It is just so dated.
