I am from Canada and am visiting New York next week. I am very excited to see dear Evan Hansen in person before it closes. My one question is one I would really like an answer to. I would love to stage door and meet the cast. Dear Evan Hansen is my favourite musical of all time and it would be so special to me if I could meet the cast. If someone could give me a response before Thursday the 11 of august that would be absolutely amazing. thank you
This is the stage door at DEAR EVAN HANSEN several days ago. You’ll see the cast, but no one is signing anything nor interacting with anyone. It is what it is.
How exciting for you to see your favorite musical. It is a very moving and even thrilling show. Unfortunately, with the COVID restrictions, you will not be able to "meet" the cast. Actors are not allowed to mingle with the public like in the pre-COVID days, and I am sure many of them would LOVE to be able to stop and chat and have photos taken and sign autographs. Hopefully, things will get better soon, but there is so much riding on the health of all involved on Broadway, that at this time, it is just not safe. I know, this sucks, but that is the time in which we are living. I hope you have a wonderful trip to NY in spite of that.
While there are some shows on Broadway that have resumed the regular stage door experience, unfortunately Dear Evan Hansen is not one of them. However, I think that's a good thing. And I actually think you will view it as a good thing too, after you see the show.
The contents of that video do not, to me at least, look like a fun experience, in the least. And I think you will value the experience of taking in what you just saw, over standing in that massive crowd. Even if you did get to meet the cast. Dear Evan Hansen is an incredibly moving piece of theatre, and this way you get to spend more time with it in your head, rather than spending that time with a gigantic standing crowd in your head.
Trust me, I think seeing this particular show without the stage door will be a more meaningful experience than seeing it with it. I hope you enjoy! :)
Can I just chime in to say I like to see the community being kind to a newcomer asking this question since this is a super touchy subject and I like that everyone is being supportive here.
A good strategy might be to prepare a addressed/stamped return envelope in Canada and bring it with you to NYC, and then get an envelope stamped here in the U.S and drop it off at one of the many post offices in Midtown. It will save international shipping at least one way.
(6x9 envelopes work best)

Thank you for all your help. I just had a question about getting the program signed. Do you address the envelope to the theatre and they will send it back to the return address? I loved hearing everyone's input. Thank you for helping make my trip all the more special. It is greatly appreciated.
It appears that each show has a different stage door policy. I know Hugh Jackman comes out and greets the crowd and will even stand in the background of your selfie without getting too close. But, no one at The Music Man is signing anything at the stage door. Billy Crystal, however, does come and sign Playbills as long as you are wearing your mask. But at Dear Evan Hansen you will just get a wave and the cast is quickly ushered away.
Another alternative would be to book a favorite artist via Broadway Plus or Cameo. Chances are, some of the Dear Evan Hansen cast members are involved with those sites.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Oh my goodness. Thank you all so much for helping out a newcomer. I was expecting no one to reply, and I would be wasting my breathing. Thank you for all your kindness. You really don't know how much it means to me.
I have returned from my trip and would have written a response early but I was swamped this past week. Anyways, Thank you to everyone for all the help. We decided to watch the curtain call instead of stage door-ing but ended up standing across the street as we had nothing better to do. Also, life lesson: eat dinner beforehand so you don't end up eating a messy, greasy sandwich in your hotel at 11:30 pm. We also decided to send in our extra playbills to get them signed. Also, I must say the cast was incredible. I cannot say enough about Steven Christopher Anthony's performance and Gaten Matarazzo was incredible. Once again, thank you to everyone who helped make seeing this show and my entire trip a dream come true. It was truly a magical experience and I can't wait to return.
