The main reason for the live from each show's respective theater last year was because the Winter Garden couldn't house multiple shows' sets, not COVID concerns. With this back at Radio City, you can likely bet they'll be in person at the ceremony.

Warren Carlyle promises a special number for The Music Man --

"I'll be celebrating probably by going to rehearsal to make a number for the Tony Awards, getting in the studio and making something amazing for the Tony Awards. It's really special, it really is, for Sutton and Hugh. I love them all and recognition for all the hard work. Hugh rehearsed for three years. I don't know another leading man who rehearsed for three years."

Company should do “Getting Married Today”, its a showstopper that could attract a lot of people

I wouldn't be surprised if Flying Over Sunset and Caroline, or Change do perform, but do How and Lot's Wife because all they need is a single costume, a single wig, and maybe an afternoon of rehearsal to get back into it. 

Overall though, I just REALLY hope that all the performances are LIVE at Radio City. It's just a much better show when that's the case.

I would love for this to happen, but it still costs money that I hope they can devote this to. Plus, these performances play some part in exposure that benefits potential licensing... or just for it to be preserved and live on through the internet...

I completely agree. It show’s off Matt who is looking like the front runner rn. A great, funny, uptempo that involves, in part, the entire cast would really be amazing.

I can see the arguments either way for Caroline, or Change performing.

Pro- Sharon has a strong chance of winning. It would bring attention back to the show and the production. If she's already going to fly back for the award show...

Con- The expense. There's already a promo video and an Olivier's performance for interested theater fans and the Tonys are not going to reach a wide audience beyond those people. I don't know that it would increase streams/album sales or Roundabout subscriptions in a meaningful way.

Agreed - and to reply to another poster asking should they do a performance without Katrina, they already snubbed her from a nomination, so it makes more sense to highlight a nominated performance. 

I wonder when casts usually find out that they’re confirmed for a performance. The PS cast are still hopeful but unsure. I have to imagine they will, since they haven’t had any opportunities to perform elsewhere.

I may be 100% wrong, but my understanding is that it's not the Tonys charge a huge rate to do it (I don't think they charge at all, but could be 100% wrong again), it's that shows have to pay for everything associated with it.

The Hadestown clip below is a great example where they probably had to pay someone to write that whole opening section, give the director and choreographer billed hours to stage and choreograph that section and make the adjustments needed for the new stage without the turntables, several sections of the song rempoved, and with all the Swings in it (Hadestown usually only has 5 ensemble members), pay for a rehearsal space, pay all the actors and musicians for rehearsal time to learn all of that, and transport the costumes and props to Radio City. Plus, I'm not sure about this one but, I wouldn't be surprised if they made them pay for and build the new set and to bring their own har, makeup, and costume people.

In 2016 the Spring Awakening revival used a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to perform. Their goal was 200k. From the campaign info: "The money raised would be used to fly the Spring Awakening cast back to New York (since the show closed, the actors are spread all around the country). It would also go toward getting costumes, instruments and props out of storage, paying for rehearsal space and of course performing on the Tony telecast itself."

I'd assume the cost would be less for say C,oC or FOS to do the same thing if they perform the songs mentioned in this thread. One person vs. the entire cast.

We attended the Tony Awards the year Hadestown won and what really amazed me was that there were no sets for any of the shows. All of them are projections of the actual set. The props and some set pieces are there, but if you look closely at “The Prom” number, the entire background is projected and only Emma’s bedroom is a set piece and is not an exact replica of the one that was used in the show.

The Paradise Square ensemble was in rehearsals for the Tony Awards this week - presumably to feature a bit of the dancing, followed by Let It Burn.

Watched this NYT event live at 4pm, and it featured performances from each of the nominated new musicals  and Company. A few takeaways from the interviews in between songs were that Myles Frost had COVID twice, Jaquel Spivey's recent absences were caused by a sinus infection, and Shoshana Bean, who was supposed to perform with Billy Crystal, is sick. Michael Paulson said "COVID has interfered" as the reason why they weren't appearing, later saying that Shoshana was "out sick" and Billy was being cautious. Jason Robert Brown appeared instead. Also, we FINALLY got a public appearance of Joaquina singing "Let It Burn."

With the awards being in nine days (!) I am surprised we have not heard anything official regarding performances. Even if it's just the show announcements. Would love for any show to perform - play or musical... not much different from a producer's perspective, but I just hope that if they shell out that investment, they see a return on it in sales.

I'm currently watching Let's Make a Deal Primetime on CBS. I just saw an add for the Tonys, and it said that each of the nominees for Best Musical and Best Revival (with the exception of Caroline, or Change) will be performing. Not to mention that there will apparently also be some special performances from Bernadette Peters, Billy Porter, and the original cast of Spring Awakening.
