we were dead center Row A of the balcony... and yeah looking at her bio online, it was L Morgan Lee (who can saaaang). James Jackson, Jr. and Jason Veasey stole the Thought-show, though.

Finally caught the show today. I didn’t love it, but found it interesting and fresh for what it is. In a way it feels like the slave play the musical, with the irony that both point out but nevertheless inherently depend on the self-fulfilling prophecy of the profitability of blackness. However, because Loop is raw, and messy, it lends itself the air of genuineness that Slave Player never has till the last scene. There are quite a few power ballads, but many don’t feel earned except the few highlights of self-discovery. I wanted to love it, but ended up watching something that was promising but that could definitely use more refining narrative wise.

I caught a performance of this show yesterday (Wednesday July 20th), and it was a really good show. It is not my favorite show, but it was an enjoyable evening. The songs were good, but I will not be listening to them on repeat. It was definitely different from any other show I have seen, which was nice and exciting. I think that this show needs a little refining and tweaking.

Any insight as to the current performance schedule for Usher? Is Kyle Freeman still going on for all matinee performances?

Not sure about specifics, but I was at the Wednesday matinee last week and Kyle was on for Usher. Mars was on for Thought 1 and Jon-Michael Reese was on for Thought 6 as well. I was blown away, what a performance, there was not a weak link in the cast.

Based on what I have heard from friends who have been seeing the show, Kyle and Edwin are doing Wednesday and Saturday Matinees. 

 

I stumbled on the James & Jam's 5 Questions video series a while ago and am really enjoying them.              (James Jackson Jr. & John-Andrew Morrison) This season they are interviewing the cast and production staff on the show. They just put up this interesting video. It is in the Shubert Archives. I am sure some of you here know it is located at The Lyceum Theater and they let James and Jam go up to see it. Nice video for anyone who wondered what is up there. I was up there years ago. And I have peeked through "the door". I did not know that A Strange Loop is the first Tony Winning Musical to play at that theater. (You might want to put earbuds in to catch everything that is being said.)

Everyone's favorite Tik Tok oracle is saying that a closing notice is imminent for Strange Loop and that Cabaret from London is going to the Lyceum afterwards. Anyone have any intel on this?

I asked my agent friend and he said Cabaret is going to a Shubert house and not the Hudson. As for timing, he was not sure but said ASL may be vacating sooner than we thought. So we shall see?

For those who have wanted a repeat visit to A Strange Loop and wanted to catch some of the understudies in the show (who are unilaterally fantastic), they’ve been swinging them in quite a bit lately and in different tracks so it feels fresh every time.

I recently caught Mars Rucker as #2 and Jon-Michael Reese as #5 (I think they both debuted in those tracks the past week), Edwin Bates has been in as Usher more, and yesterday, Kyle Ramar Freeman debuted as #6 (both shows) which was actually pretty cool and also a little odd since I know him mostly as Usher and so “Inwood Daddy” was like watching Usher-on-Usher action - which definitely colored the show as a different experience for me.

Y’ALL - KEEP SEEING THIS SHOW. I SWEAR ITS DIFFERENT EVERY TIME.

For some shows I got rear mezzanine, but for more recently it has been extreme side orchestra about 9-10 row back, which is a fine view and I prefer the left orchestra to the right.

The same seats are often offered on their day-of digital rush too
