Apologies to post here but figure this board gets more visibility.
Im going to London 3/13 and looking for WE recos, preferably something that isnt expected to transfer to Broadway (last year I saw Company, though no gripes there to have a Sondheim musical be my first WE show and with a predominately different cast) END RANT, but yea looking for something more WE-specific. Ill only have time for one, maybe two shows.
I'd say "Everyone's Talking about Jamie" or "& Juliet" as I don't see either transferring anytime soon. Maybe in a season or two. But there's always plenty of interesting plays popping up.
There are two Mischief shows - Magic Goes Wrong at Vaudeville and Comedy About A Bank Robbery which is closing 3 May.
Back To The Future is a daytrip to Manchester and there are 19.55 pound seats available.
City of Angels starts at the Garrick 5 March with a UK cast including Rosalie Craig who starred as Bobbie in Company that you saw.
There is a very UK show based on a UK television show that should be very British and not likely to transfer. It is Only Fools and Horses at the Haymarket. The Visit - not the musical but a new play adapted by Tony Kushner just started previews at the National Theatre starring Lesley Manville who is a fabulous actor. I saw her in Ibsen's Ghosts and she deserved every accolade she received for that performance. But NT says its 3 1/2 hours with two intervals.
There is a production of Witness For The Prosecution in a courtroom!
I cant speak to any other than Bank Robbery. You can read about these shows on Theatreboard
I definitely second seeing either of the Mischief shows (or both!). If you're looking for something kind of funky and interactive (think Sleep No More), try Alice's Adventures Underground. It's a real blast. And since you're interested in things that probably won't transfer, I'd check out what's playing at places like Donmar Warehouse and the Almeida. Both theaters put on really great and very subversive shows. You'll also be arriving just as Emilia Clarke starts her run The Seagull and just as Alan Cumming and Daniel Radcliffe are ending their runs in Endgame at the Old Vic, both of which are probably worth checking out if you can.
And of course, the most West End shows of them all: Mousetrap or The Woman in Black.
I’d say “City of Angels” or maybe “Sleepless” if you want a musical that probably won’t go anywhere past the West End. For plays, Tony Kushner’s new adaptation of “The Visit” is playing at The National and Jennifer Saunders is starring in “Blithe Spirit”.
I'd recommend Everybody's Talking About Jamie, as someone above mentioned. It's a fun show and agree that it's not likely to transfer. I saw it when I was over in December and really enjoyed it. Charlie Stemp as Bert is worth the price of admission to Mary Poppins.
I agree that at this point, “Jamie” most probably won’t transfer but the whole show was professionally filmed with the original cast and can be found on YouTube so I’d say to go see something you won’t be able to see anywhere else.
SouthernCakes is right. And moreover, box offices in London seem to have more day of flexibility in regard to adjusting prices to sell tickets, particularly close to showtime.
