A 16 year old would not like Hadestown, most 16 year-olds would hate it.

Can we assume she has never seen Wicked? If not, no contest for a 16 year old girl. That demographic is one of the reasons the show is the juggernaut it is. Also, Dear EvanHansen was loved by a couple of 15 year-olds I know. It is intense, but it is about a teenage boy.

I definitely disagree on this. At the show - especially at the rush, I've noticed a lot of teenagers and twenty-somethings who are big fans of the show. I've shown some of the videos and music to a bunch of my friends, and even the non-theatre kids loved Hadestown.

I don't think that age has to do with enjoying Hadestown; I was obsessed with Greek mythology as a kid because of the Percy Jackson books (not the musical!) and a lot of gen z share that. Also the entire OBC is still in Hadestown, which is fantastic!

Thank y'all so much for all the input!

Looked like Mean Girls was the unanimous choice there for a long bit, then Beetlejuice started getting some love, and now I'm also really intrigued about Moulin Rouge for them.  

Lots to think about to decide for mid-November and I appreciate you all weighing in SO MUCH!  Coming to NY and getting to see a play is a rare treat for us (Hamilton and Wicked were for the other daughter's 15th birthday) and so I do like to make the best informed decision I can and I'm so thankful I have y'all to ask.

Based on almost every report on here, The Lightening Thief has gotten bad reports. I’d think any other show on here would be a better option.

Since it is Halloween month, I wonder if what your daughter gravitates/gravitated toward for Halloween costumes might suggest the better option of show. Princess costumes might suggest Mean Girls might be a better fit? Ghouly costumes might suggest Beetlejuice. But what do I know? I haven’t seen either and I don’t have kids. Lol.

While we all here love Halloween (I mean, I seriously have a life size pirate ship coming out my front door right now), the daughter this is for is a dancer and loves anything with music and motion.  I briefly considered Chicago because of that (she and her sister can quote the movie) but we've seen it so much, movie wise, that I'm afraid it wouldn't feel special or new.  That's why I'm now seriously considering MR.  She might enjoy that spectacle?

Please let us know what show you choose and your family’s review(s) afterwards. What a great parent you are and what lucky children you have. My parents couldn’t afford to take me to New York City when I was a child and the closest I got to theater with them was Disney on Ice as part of the state fair or being a part of local high school productions. In fact, I didn’t get to go to New York City for the first time until 2010 (when I was 46). Obviously, it was love at first sight.

No matter which of these shows you choose, you and your daughter are sure to have a wonderful time! Seeing bway shows with my mom have made up a lot of my favorites memories and made us even closer. Have fun!!

If you don’t consider it too mature for her and the price isn’t objectionable, I’d 100% recommend Moulin Rouge! Also, has some great dancing (can’t speak for dancing in Mean Girls or Beetlejuice).

We live in a cultural hellhole so I try so hard to take them places even if we have to sacrifice other things to do it.  Sometimes I think it's financially irresponsible to do these little trips, but I had them late in life and, now that her sister is far away in college, you realize just how little time you have with them.  I do want them to know there is more to life than small town Mississippi where we, honest to God, live in a town where it's still illegal to not only BUY alcohol but possess it.

I live in Oklahoma City now so I understand although alcohol is legal and I’ve discovered a vibrant theater scene here. It’s good for your children to realize that there’s life beyond their backyard.

When I got older and out on my own, my parents and I started attending touring Broadway shows together in Tulsa. I enjoyed some more (Chicago, Mamma Mia) than others (Cats), but now that dad is deceased for almost 7 years and my mom has dementia, I cherish every one of those memories. You’re doing a great job!

I have not seen Beetlejuice, but for a Sweet 16 celebration I would do Mean Girls. I went into that with extremely low expectations, and was laughing hysterically within the first two minutes. Dear Evan Hansen is also great (especially for teens), but perhaps a bit of a downer for a Sweet 16 celebration.

If you want to see a new “hot” show on Broadway, I personally would vote for Hadestown over Moulin Rouge. I may be in the minority, but Moulin Rouge left me cold. The costumes, sets, and dancing were all great, but I couldn’t stand the constant “Name That Tune” snippets of various songs. About 5 min in, when they started dancing the Can-Can, I couldn’t help thinking “OMG I have to sit through 2 more hours of this?” Though I did like it better in the second act, when they cut down on the number of songs and Aaron Tveit had more of a chance to strut his stuff, so to speak. Hadestown was a bit long, but I thought it was incredibly beautiful and moving, and the OBC is killing it!

Regardless of what you pick, you will have a great time, and your daughter is a lucky girl!

Probably a moot point, given how hard it is to get tickets for wither.  I can’t see a 16 year old liking Hadestown, let alone in comparison to MR, with its choice of songs and lavish production values.

Mean Girls is a better show, in my opinion but Beetlejuice is fun and it’s always a treat to see the OBC.

Hadestown actually has a very large teen following on social media - there are plenty of “stan” accounts and fangirls/boys who love the show. I wouldn’t worry about a younger person not enjoying it.

FWIW I just asked my 16 yo and 13 yo daughters whether they liked Hadestown or MR more. They both immediately said “Hadestown,” though they did point out that they liked MR more than I did.

Then again, my 16 yo’s assessment of Hello, Dolly! was, “all she did was eat a chicken!” So feel free to take their opinions with a grain of salt!

Lol. Well, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed Dolly as much at their age (I now live it) either. Hadestown is a great choice. They may also find Orpheus (Reeve Carney) dreamy as do I. As do I.

I'm going Beetlejuice. I've seen both and am seeing Beetlejuice again in a couple of weeks. While Mean Girls may be the better show, Beetlejuice is way more fun and an experience.
