Ok I'm going to say it once and for all: Stephanie Styles is NOT getting nominated. Not happening.

Even though it's not the flashiest role, given recent love for Diana Rigg and Mary Beth Peil in this category, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Julie Halston get in.  I'm not predicting this, but wouldn't at all be surprised if the nominees ended up being Stiles, Halston, Grey, Testa and Stroker.

Just curious. Are any of the actresses in The Prom not considered supporting? No one is talking about them here.

A few people have mentioned Angie Schowerer, I’m not sure anyone else has any sort of chance. All of them except Beth and Caitlin would be supporting but the roles are pretty small to realistically get recognition.

I love Angie Schworer in THE PROM, but I agree that her role is likely too small to be recognized. But I'm very pleased to see that Angie was nominated for a Chita Rivera Award in the category of Outstanding Female Dancer in a Broadway Show.

I was very impressed by Isabelle McCalla when I saw The Prom, but she doesn't have a chance either due to the size of her part.  We were in the front row and she was acting the hell out of her part, hopefully she gets something bigger in the future.

Nearly locks for nomination:

- Amber Gray

- Ali Stroker

- Sarah Stiles

I think Testa is likely to get in (she was last nominated in 2001!). The fifth slot will be up between Bonnie Milligan, Leslie Kritzer, or Stephanie Hsu, all of whom have the hurdle of being attached to a show that is closed or divisive.

I think Stroker will win it. It seems even folks who don't care for the production quite like her, and her win would be historic moment of visibility for disabled performers.

I believe the nominees will be:

Amber Gray

Ali Stroker

Sarah Stiles

Mary Testa

Leslie Kritzer

Right now I think Amber Gray is going to win. It’s likely going to be a very close race though. People really seem to love Stroker’s work so it’s very likely that she could win. It’s also worth noting that the her winning the tony would a wonderful breakthrough for handicapped performers. She could be helped by being possibly the least divisive part her production. However even if her performance isn’t divisive, the production surrounding it is, and that might hurt her chance. And while people really enjoy Stroker, I feel like Gray’s notices are even better. Hadestown looks like it’s going to do very well coming tony night, and giving her the trophy is one of the best ways to reward the show. Also, unless if the fates breakthrough into supporting actress, which I doubt, Gray won’t have anyone from her show to split votes with, while Mary Testa could end up taking away a few votes from Stroker. No matter the outcome, either one of those two will make a respected winner, and I’m very excited to see how this category plays out.

I’m fairly confidant in all of my predicted nominees except Kritzer. I could see Stephanie Styles getting in instead of her. I thought Styles did a great job, and the audience seemed to be responding really well to her work. I originally was predicting Styles over Kritzer, but I think the voters will go the respected veteran over the newcomer this year. Even people who hated Beetlejuice seem to really love Kritzer’s work. Kritzer also has lots of fans despite the fact that she never made it as big as most people seem to think she should’ve, and this feels like a great chance to finally give her a nomination.

I did not think Leslie Kritzer would be a contender, but she has been recognized by the Drama League, Drama Desk, and Outer Circle Critics, so she definitely could get in. I know she's never been nominated and has fans in the industry.

Now that the nominees have been announced... who do y’all think will win?

I’m placing my bet on Ali Stroker she was great. Amber Grey was too though...

Having seen all the nominees, Amber Gray should 100% win. I wouldn’t be upset at Stroker or Testa (whose performance in the final scene was incredible) winning, but this should absolutely be Amber Gray’s year.

Every dang year, this category takes time off my life cus of how stressful it is, I swear! This is gonna be a nail biter. I know who I want to see win and I REALLY think SHOULD win (Amber Grey) but I can also 100% recognize that Ali Strocker is giving just as good a performance. Something though just about Amber's journey with this show and this character and growing with it and developing it from the ground up just strikes a huge cord in me that wants to give her the edge for it. Ali is giving a great performance as well but I don't know if it carries the same connection as Grey's performance does. Ali is a good Ado Annie. Grey IS Persephone.

Are we discounting Sarah Stiles because she's in a comedic role? I'm not saying she's necessarily the most deserving or better than Gray or Stroker, but I definitely think she should be considered a serious competitor. For one, she has an attention grabbing, flashy role - something that Stroker doesn't necessarily have going for her, and the Tony awards tend to gravitate to. And also, Tootsie has two nominees in that category (along with Oklahoma!), and historically awards tend to be given to someone from the productions with multiple nominees, which gives her an edge over Gray. She also has been getting singled out for her performance in almost every review of Tootsie, and she has a long and successful Broadway career (including a previous Tony nom) of the three of them, and a lot of people are predicting they'll reward that this season (SJB, Andre de Shields, Elaine May).

My money's personally on Stroker with Stiles as a close second, but I thought I'd throw that out there as food for thought.

Actually, historically it's the productions with multi actors nominated in the same category that are at a slight DISADVANTAGE. Keeping in mind we are talking FEATURED categories here because it's a different beast then leading and honestly I think it's harder to stand out in featured then in leading. So looking back from 2000 till now, and at featured actor and actress categories only....

WON: 6
Hairspray, Billy Elliot (Actor), Hamilton, Contact, Nine, Carousel

LOST: 11
An American in Paris, The Scottsboro Boys, Porgy and Bess, Kiss Me Kate, Swing!, 42nd Street, The Boy from Oz, The Color Purple (Original), Billy Elliot the Musical (Featured Actress), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Fun Home

And I don't count 2001 cus ALL the nominated actors that season were only from 2 shows so they were all splits.

EDIT:
I went and counted the featured actors and actresses in PLAYS since 2000 as well just for conformation of the trend in numbers

WINS: 9
LOST: 17

Is anyone else as stunned as I am that Lilli Cooper snuck in there? Some reports I read from Tootsie felt she was miscast, and she wasn't nominated for any other Supporting Actress awards this year.

I wouldn't say she was miscast; she's just performing a role that stands out as literally the only one without a single funny, interesting line. She sings beautifully and I had no gripes, but she makes no impression. I wasn't a fan of Be More Chill and didnt see Beetlejuice, but Hsu or Kritzer seemed to have earned this spot, and Cooper's nomination makes me think these Tonys love them some Tootsie (and bodes well for Stiles).

And while normally I think the logic dictates that Oklahoma! fans would split their votes between Testa and Stroker, and Tootsie fans would split their votes between Cooper and Stiles, leaving Grey to emerge victorious, this isnt that sorta situation. I think Stroker and Stiles are overwhelming favorites in their respective shows- its unlikely all those Oklahoma! fans will be a mixed bag of Stroker and Testa fans. Stroker's reception (in general and in the reviews) was ecstatic. Same goes for Stiles vs. Cooper. And i thinkk that leaves us with a genuine three-way race that is near impossible to predict.

(My gut tells me its Stroker, since Fontana is a near-lock for Tootsie, and one of the Hadestown men is likely to grab Supporting Actor; this is the only real shot I think Oklahoma! has at an acting win. But who knows?)

Definitely surprised by her nomination, but absolutely deserving. I found her super grounded in a show with a lot of craziness. And of course her voice is excellent.

If I were a voter, I have no clue who I would vote for. I might lean towards Gray just a bit simply because I think she might show just a tad bit more range. Stroker is phenomenal with her Dolly Parton inspired Ado Annie and Mary Testa is legendary in a major career highlight. Sarah Stiles gives a comedic masterclass and has the best song/character in the show. Unfortunately, Lilli Cooper isn't really in the running for me. She was very good, but she feels like a bit of a place filler. This is the most interesting category of the year for me, since it includes some of my favorite performances of the year. I could see a vote split happening between Gray and Stroker that leads to a win for Testa or Stiles. I don't know how this one will go, but I'll be happy no matter who wins.

Huh. Could have sworn I read something recently that said there was an advantage. Oh well, goes to show you can't trust everything you read on the internet, lol! Thanks for the correction.

Either way, I still think Sarah Stiles is definitely in the running for the win.

Yeah usually two actors in the same show is a bad news for those actors but I do agree with BenElliott above that likely Cooper and Testa are not really so much in this race. Still it could split JUST enough for someone to slip ahead where they might not have previously. I would say that if Testa was NOT nominated that it was gonna be Ali by a mile but I think while Testa is not gonna win, her inclusion here could take JUST enough votes to knock her out of this.

Gray seems like a pretty easy way to reward the cast as a whole, and I feel like she'll get caught up in the kind of sweep that the Tonys love to do lately.

She does the best possible with a poorly written role but I don't think anyone walked away from Tootsie thinking "that Lilli Cooper was AMAZING". I think Ali Stoker and Amber Gray have that sort of energy.
