Now it remains to be seen if this a critic-proof juggernaut like Pretty Woman or if its box office starts to gradually lessen like Summer. At least this has Block’s performance.

I'd say Block could still nab the Tony (mainly because everyone loves her and less about the show itself), and costumes, but I'm not expecting too many other nominations. Even the supporting cast didn't get much love in these reviews.

Bummer. I had a sinking suspicion when even those who loved it acknowledged it was thin. And you know NY critics aren't ones to be forgiving.

Hopefully, as you said, Miles2Go2, it has a PRETTY WOMAN performance and doesn't suffer the fate of SUMMER.

I'm with Green and especially Holdren. The show was below par, substandard entertainment. Block's performance notwithstanding.

Jesse Green's review is weird... if people get past the negative first part, it sounds like he kind of likes the performers/music/physical production. And there are usable quotes.

Also, the Kanye press can help overshadow the reviews!

I loved Green's Edward Albee line and Holdren's Bernhardt/Hamlet quip.

In general the reviews were ok and aside from aculture, no one really hated.

Frozen got Best Musical nom for less than this and I think The Prom got this same (if less enthusiastic) recepcetion (they had a CP from NYT tho).

All is not lost and I hope the show, which is so fun, can resist! Also, Block was universally praised, so there’s a chance of win for her still.

Thank god I'm not the only one that thought this was an absolute lame mess. I truly think you have to be a Cher fan to find this slop even slightly enjoyable.

I loved Stephanie and would watch her in everything.  The rest of it was not great.  I am thinking this will be big with all Cher fans for about a year and maybe close up.  I think people won't care what the critics say about this one.

I can’t stop watching the Stephanie & Cher encore!

Saw this on Sat. I left the theater feeling nothing. Didn't love it, didn't hate it which is pretty damning actually.

I hope we can lay to rest the biographical jukebox musicals with three stars to portray a star at different points in their career. It worked occasionally when the three Chers discussed events among themselves but just think how much fun it would have been to have Cher discuss her life with LaVerne who only appeared for a few seconds....

Get a ticket at TKTS and enjoy the costumes....especially the Native American chief during the Mackie section. Yes. I'm shallow

I think any Tony predictions at this point are pointless.  There's at least 5 or 6 or 7 musicals/revivals left to open this season, right?   It's going to be a wild year!

Video from tonight's curtain call, there's no way that you can't tell me that Stephanie J. Block nails her impression...

Some other reviewer said basically the same thing about Summer during its La Jolla tryout.

Obviously a lot will depend on O'Hara and (to a lesser extent) Noblezada, but I still think Block could win the Tony with the show being walloped as it was tonight.

Given the size of the role and the reviews that she was getting, Noblezada isn’t a threat.

O’Hara is my question mark but don’t if she or the production itself will pull it off enough to give her a second win basically in a row against a veteran doing a real life person.

This show was never going to be a critic's darling. With few exceptions throughout her career, Cher, herself, was never a critic's darling. So why would they praise a show based on her life? Personally,  I couldn't care less what the critics have to say about this one. And neither will any of her fans. And, let's face it, if you're not a fan (or a theater nerd), you're not going to be running to see this anyway. Can't wait to see it on Saturday!

I'd say Stephanie has a good shot at a nomination, though a win may be even harder. The last time a show that wasn't nominated for Best Musical took an acting prize at the Tonys was Heather Headley for Aida back in 2000 (though Katie Finneran did win for the unnominated revival of Promises, Promises back in 2010). Not to mention that The Cher Show would really have to overcome the whole industry bias against commodity musicals.

I am disappointed by these reviews - and I hope the supporting cast can still be recognized/rewarded - though I think the supporting players from Tootsie now have a better shot at nominations.   I wish they had stuck to the TV-show production framing device that they had in Chicago; it made it stand out from other jukebox musicals.  They made a calculated decision to dumb it down for the masses and it didn't pay off, at least critically.

But didn’t the critics harshly review the framing device in Chicago?

THE PROM definitely got better reviews than this. Mostly positive with some mixed, some negative. But I agree I think this still definitely has a chance.

Don't care about the critics at all when it comes to this show.

Like Cher and Cher's story - they work it and it works.  Loved every minute.

I don't believe there were "many" major reviews in Chicago (I could be wrong), but I wish they would have worked on making the device work more effectively on Broadway than removing it altogether.  I remember seeing Summer at La Jolla and rolling my eyes when it opened with a famous song, and the Donna Summer saying something to the effect of "wow, I had a interesting life, let me tell ya".  I was so sad when I caught The Cher Show in New York (after being obsessed with it in Chicago) and it opened pretty much the same way.
