Any feelings as to how the show might fare in regional and amateur productions?

I'd love to see it here in Chicago sometime.

My friends in Cleveland cannot wait for it. smiley I have no idea if it will tour, but I think it could be great for regional productions.

There are a few Band Era- Swing  review shows that  tour the country.  They don't seem to pack the crowds in. Usually they play Saturday and Sunday afternoon dates.   They bus in the veterans and retirement homes.

It will do well if they can find the talent to play instruments and act onstage. I'm optimistic that a tour could be done economically IFF they don't saddle it with trying to get back whatever they lost on Broadway (no idea how the economics of that work, but someone will likely chime in and tell us all soon)

These statements always confuse me.  You say it is one of the best shows of the season but you have never seen it.

Yes, I have never seen the show. Do I think it has a wonderful cast recording, cast, and plot? Yes, I do. I can say it's one of the best because I've enjoyed what I've seen of the show better than many things this season.

Huh?  You have never seen the show but you can call it one of the best?  What nonsense.

Let me rephrase, since apparently, my point isn't making enough sense here. Not everyone can see every single show every season. I'm new to the theatre scene and have only seen a handful of shows so far, so naturally what I like listening to/watching best, I'll consider the best. Not sure why you had to respond that way, but okay.

It is like stating that a book is the best book ever but you have only read excerpts or reviews.   Or saying a painting is a brilliant piece of art but you have only seen a picture of it.  Or saying movie is the best movie in 20 years but you have only seen clips or read reviews.

Would anyone be kind enough to briefly describe what changed between the Paper Mill production and the current production?

I am a diehard fan of BANDSTAND.  Among the many changes from the Paper Mill  productionthat I noticed: The introductory scene was changed, the ending scene was changed.  Story was simplified with the elimination of characters (Cory's father and mother, his girlfriend).  Songs in first act were dropped and replaced with others.  Beth Leavel's song was changed, Cory is now responsible for Laura's husband's death (as opposed to having witnessed it)   Hotel door scene in second act changed - Cory and Laura do not connect until later. Addition of song "This is Life"

The show was transformed in my opinion and, while not perfect, the show became a moving theatrical experience.  I am truly sorry that its run is ending. .

That explains some things. I thought it was a little odd that Corey's character appeared to have no family at all, but I guess it was a "been there, tried that, didn't work" thing. And I'm very glad about the addition of "This Is Life" -- I thought it was one of the show's most subversive and strongest moments, and helped pace the love story really well.

@ SmokyLady Thank you for enlightening me with your comparisons. And why couldn't someone call art brilliant if they've never seen it in person? I've never seen Starry Night in real life, but I guess by that logic it's a horrible piece of art. If personally see clips and read the synopsis of the show, and like what I see in comparison to everything else, then I will see it as a favorite of mine of the season. Simple. I don't see the need to continue this disagreement, so have a good day.

Curious as to what show people think will take the Jacob's Theater now that it will soon be vacant? Could this be the new future home for the Sutton Foster Sweet Charity transfer?!?

That wasn't confirmed though? Maybe they could announce a transfer in the Fall but it's a pipe dream. I personally think Carousel could play here if they're going for a smaller-scale production.

But you did not see the show.. so I am also confused by your original post where you said it was one of the best of the season. You either saw the show or you didn't.  Maybe it is one of the cast recordings that made you feel the best in the season?  .  Maybe your wording is wrong?

What I'm saying is that the cast recording+plot+cast are some of the best of the season, thus leading me into thinking it is a very good show, possibly one of the best shows of the season. I think people automatically see "best show" and "I haven't seen the show personally" together and jump to conclusions. No, I haven't seen the show, but I believe it's a good one that has some of the best material of the season.

Understood.  There was some back and forth on another thread with someone who was bashing a performer in a show they did not see.  I think some of the tone and aggression spilled over to this thread when your comment popped up.    I saw Bandstand a few weeks ago.  I liked it.  I was very uncomfortable in that theater.  It was warm and the seats were tight.  So I think that took a little of my pleasure away.  The leads were great.  Laura Osnes is so talented and Corey Cott is so handsome.

Yeah, it's fine. Some people on this board seem very quick to jump to conclusions, and I'd rather not point fingers, but it seems to unfortunately happen often. Anyways, Bandstand seems great! I'd love to see it before it closes, but I just came back from NYC, so it's unlikely. I definitely think theaters can have a negative  effect on your enjoyment of the show, that's unfortunate that you had to go through that.

It was the show this season that took me by surprise, and I've seen all but "Come From Away.".  The album dropped, I listened to 4 songs, and I was captivated.  In no small part by the orchestrations and arrangements.  And then the score they serve: it's just a beauty, with range and depth.  And the lead performances, including the band members, are stellar.  When I saw it, I certainly saw flaws, particularly in its slightly forced too-happy ending (which it doesn't actually need to satisfy us). But they landed as quibbles, because the show's staging is so expert, so visual and so unlike any other show. And the show has a real heartbeat to match its heart  I believe its title and association with other eras and generic musical tastes didn't help. But it's been lovingly handled, beautifully marketed, and it's still gloriously performed 8 times a week for another five weeks. I'm heading back. Anyone who can't get here, take a listen, at least a couple of times.  It may well burrow into your emotions, even if you thought it couldn't.  I certainly didn't have any interest in the piece prior to the recording.  I hate to think that I might've missed this.

Dude, you didn't say could possibly be or leads you to think it might be, you said "This is a real shame, one of the best shows of the season with an absolutely beautiful cast recording.". You can try to "revise" it now, after the fact and try to make everyone think it's everyone else's problem for overreacting or you can be intellectually honest and own what you said, that you decided a show you've never seen was one of the best of the season. You're certainly entitled to do that and others are equally entitled to point out how ridiculous that is.

Though in fairness, Tony voters might think you're on to something. Instead of having to schlep around and actually see all these shows before voting on which one is best, they'd love to just read the wikipedia entry to see the plot and who's in it and maybe listen to a few songs off the cast album, vote based on that and call it good. Soooo much easier.

^^ Woah. Chill out? I recognize I've worded my statement incorrectly, but there really is no need to be ridiculously rude about it. I'll go back and edit it, but there are people on this board that will be extremely obnoxious about a wrongly worded sentence. Like you.

So just say you worded it wrong and own it. Had you done that in the first place instead of trying to gaslight other people into believing they're the ones with the issue, no one would have said anything else about it. And I honestly don't give a crap if you go back and edit it. This isn't the New York Times. A lack of personal responsibility and blaming others for questioning what you wrote is what is truly rude and obnoxious.

Uh,, I've openly said I worded my phrase wrongly? I don't see the problem? The person calling me out could've been respectful and less condescending, and if they called me out in a nice fashion I would've explained what I meant and went back to edit my phrase in the first place. I don't believe I gaslighted anyone, when they're the one approaching a clumsy statement in a bluntly rude way. Thank you for trying to explain my own comment for me wink. I'm afraid I'm done trying to argue over a quickly-written remark!
