Ambrose will likely win the Drama Desk Award. That is a lovely compensation prize.

And this has nothing to do with the Tony Awards but come on- this woman is amazing

Katrina Lenk performs at Broadway Backwards

I just want a fight rather than a coronation. It was so boring last year knowing the other ladies were just looking forward to performing at the Tonys and hearing their names being called as a nominee knowing full well who was collecting that Tony.

ETA: Speaking about Julie Andrews losing the Tony, is Judy Holliday known as an actress who won a Tony and an Oscar over performances that have become legendary through the test of time?

If Lenk and Ambrose don’t literally hit each other on the red carpet, I’m going to be very unsatisfied.

But in all seriousness, I agree with you. It’ll be a more tense Tony night and that’s sure to be fun!

After that performance last night, I’d say Weed will get nominated. If they put Louderman in Featured, I’d say they both have a shot at a nomination.

Yup, after Weed's performance I'd definitely say that they're pushing her for the Featured Actress nomination - and I'm betting that she'll get it. Such a smart move on their part to focus on one girl out of the four (five?) that will be eligible for that award.

I would just like to take a moment to rant about the fact that people believe Gavin Lee isn't a lock. Listen, I understand it's been 4 months since that show opened, but we can't forget about that performance. Butz is pretty good, Cariani and Stachel give swell performances, and Alex Newell's "Mama Will Provide" is really great, but none of them have an absolute showstopper like Gavin does. He said on Live At Five the other day that he literally has to be on an oxygen tank following "You're Not a Loser". Gavin's performance is fantastic top to bottom, and that song is the cherry on top.

Considering the lukewarm reviews towards Butz last night, I find it absurd that Gavin Lee isn't the favorite right now. However, it's a farce that the majority of people believe he may not get a nomination.

''Mama Will Provide'' is a showstopper and Newell is a threat to win as a consolation prize to OOTI.

I agree with your last statement. Gavin is giving a great performance, but I doubt he will even get a nomination. If he gets one, theres almost no shot at winning.

Am I the only one who wants to see Mean Girls even less after Weed's performance last night? That score...I genuinely don't think I could sit through it. Nothing against Barrett, I think she's super talented and will probably be nominated, but that song was just awful.

I liked the spirit behind the song a lot more than the song itself. The melody was fine; a little bland, but serviceable. Nothing particularly exciting. The lyrics were also fine. What I loved was the spirit and energy that Barrett put into it. For me, she brought the song to life and made it an anthem. For that alone she deserves to be nominated. Not saying it will definitely happen, but I’d be very pleased if it did.

That being said, half the fun for me was watching her gestures and facial expressions, so I don’t know that I’d enjoy hearing it on a recording.

I didn't think there was anything special about Lee in SpongeBob. I didn't like his song and I have no idea why it gets the response that it does. It really doesn't bring the house down at all.

Alex Newell is my favorite at this point. He's funny and warm and his vocals are insane.

Same. I thought it was horrendous. Barrett sang the hell out of it, but that material was dreadful to watch.

Although a bit of an anti-climactic prediction, I think the Tonys for Best Musical, Best Revival of a Musical and Best Revival of a Play are in this list.

^maybe so but Once On This Island is in a tight race with My Fair Lady and as much as I would LOVE to see OOTI take it home, I’m just doubtful for some reason. Plus my favorites never win so there’s that.

My Fair Lady is one of my favorite musicals of all time. But think about this, people, including me, were predicting it to be Best Revival before it ever played a performance. Why? Because the source material is so good that with a multimillion dollar budget it isn’t surprising to anyone that it could be turned it into a great experience for an audience.

Now think about Once on this Island. How many people could have taken that source material and turned it into something that received across the board raves - arguably even better reviews than My Fair Lady? That’s an amazing accomplishment.

I like to think that giving the “Best” award to a show is a way of saying “We want to encourage more of THAT on Broadway”. I’d love to see people take more chances to transform a show and make it a completely new experience from the original. I’d love to see more surprises.

^Agreed. They have equal shots to win. MY FAIR LADY is a classic and "the most perfect show" like KING & I and HELLO DOLLY. But, OOTI was revived and reborn to a new fresh creation. I haven't seen MFL, but I loved loved OOTI.

With the raves that she re-created Eliza to more complex and independent, I think Lauren Ambrose is going to win the Tony. B/c of the critical "meh" reception with Harry, I think Best Leading Actor will be between Joshua & Ethan.

I would love to see Barrett being nominated and I think Ashley or/and Kate will join her.

Katrina Lenk will win the Tony for Lead Actress.

I think this will be a situation like Fiddler, She Loves Me, and Spring Awakening vs. The Color Purple. I would argue that The Color Purple is the weakest written musical out of those four, but it had a stunning production that elevated the material to a whole new level. My Fair Lady and Carousel are better musicals than OOTI, but this new production has really heightened the material of that show. It's harder to do a brilliant production of a so-so musical than it is to do a good production of a brilliant musical. I would cast my vote to OOTI for making me love a show that I hadn't really cared much for before.
