Good question. Woody sent in Diane Keaton to accept his award at the Golden Globes earlier this year. But this is Woody's first Tony nomination in a lifetime in show business that's included a couple of runs at Broadway before this (the stage version of "Play It Again, Sam" was nominated for direction and acting awards but the play itself wasn't) and after having experienced significant personal rejection from New Yorkers after the Soon-Yi debacle, it might mean a whole lot to him to win this and he might not be able to resist being there for the chance to go onstage and hold that Tony in his hand.

This is just my opinion, for best new musical I would rather see shows nominted that contain new music. I don't see jukebox musicals. I just feel that if I already have the music at home I don't need to pay money to go hear them again onstage unless it is a concert by the artist. The few I have seen, I did not pay to see. I will say that I don't mind revues.

Yes, I hear Jersey Boys is fantastic along with Beautiful. I may just have to see Beautiful just to support my opinion but at this point I wish If/Then would have gotten nominated. I did see it and really enjoyed it. Again, just my opinion.

Just give the world Love.

What were these knuckleheads thinking? Rocky was one of the best musicals that I've seen in a while. If I could on recommend one musical for my friends and family to see this year, Rocky would be it. It's ridiculous that they chose not to nominate it as Best Musical.

I wouldn't recommend Rocky to my worst enemy. I wouldn't do something so cruel.

What does that even mean? How would one quantify it?!

Déjà vu all over again.

Last year, I had a HUH moment with the acting nominations for my favorite play of the season, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Four-member cast, three members nominated for acting awards — Tracy Letts, Amy Morton, and Carrie Coon. Madison Dirks, was left out. This made no sense to me, and I still firmly believe he was robbed.

Lo and behold, the same thing happened this year with my favorite play of the season, The Glass Menagerie. Three of the four-member cast were nominated — Cherry Jones, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Brian J. Smith. Zachary Quinto was left out. OUCH!!!

It's inevitable that there are going to be disappointments in nominations. I was surprised (not disappointed) that Andrea Martin was not nominated for her wonderful turns in Act One; Brandon J. Dirden was not nominated for his stirring Martin Luther King in "All the Way"; Marin Mazzie for her expert performance in "Bullets on Broadway"; Michael Hall for his funny and poignant performance in "The Realistic Jones"; and "The Realistic Jones"--I truly enjoyed the play, for me it was a wonderfully human comedy about the moments that we cherish in our life as we face the inevitability of mortality. Go with it and I think you'll find it rewarding. Just my two cents on a rainy night.

Not to worry about Woody showing up because there is no way that book will win. It is one of the laziest musical books to come along in many a year - just because it has laughs (discounting the vulgar ones) does not make it a good book. The musical number set ups are so obvious and far from creative and the musical numbers neither further the action or deepen the intention - all his responsibility. Gentleman's has book sewn up. Literate, witty, clever, everything you want in a musical book - even if you've seen it all before.

For score I would almost have the same argument against Bridges except for the fact that the melodies, orchestrations and performances from both leads are all so wonderfully lush and and the competition so middling that I see it winning by default but deserving of a nomination. Bridges is a poor man's Light in the Piazza, I hate that we're even comparing the two shows.

If Then and Rocky were the only two shows to try for something different. If Then was was an over achiever and Rocky had a lazy score - too bad because it wouldn't have taken much to push Aladdin out of contention.

Oh, Roxers! We are talking about the Tony nominations. Obviously those who decided the nominees share my low opinion about it.

. Bridges is a poor man's Light in the Piazza, I hate that we're even comparing the two shows.

While there might be some similarities, I think it's mostly in the orchestrations and some of the vocal arrangements.
Comparisons are always going to occur. If I recall correctly, in 2005, some people were calling Piazza - "Sondheim lite."

Needless to say, CBS is not too happy with the nominations. Here's an excerpt from a recent article:

"Among the network’s (CBS) bigger disappointments: Denzel Washington, for instance, was considered a front-runner to snag a nom for A Raisin In The Sun. Also among the impressive list of Those Snubbed: Daniel Radcliffe, Daniel Craig, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Franco, Michael C. Hall, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. CBS instead must now contend with an awards ceremony that will very much appeal to the hardcore theater crowd but less so to casual fans — aka Most Viewers."

@Blaxx - "I wouldn't recommend Rocky to my worst enemy. I wouldn't do something so cruel."

Sorry you feel that way sweetie. I'm just glad there's so many people in the general public who don't know who you are and don't have to listen to your negativity.

I was also glad to see that Rocky is already listed in the Top 40 Things to do in NYC.

For those who have mentioned being upset about Alan Cummings not being nominated, he wasn't eligible to be nominated.

The Tony's administrative panel ruled that since he's already won the award for the same role in 1998 that he would be ineligible.

". Bridges is a poor man's Light in the Piazza, I hate that we're even comparing the two shows. "

They're both cut from the same cloth: burlap.

They're not musicals --- they're dirgicals, as are Marie Christine, Floyd Collins, Dream True, Passion, Sunday in the Park, etc, etc.

No wonder pretentious, nose-in-the-air snobs love them.

But what a sad state of affairs for the rest of us!

And to add to the topic of this thread, I'm sorry that Jason Robert Btown's inert, muddy glop of a score was nominated. No doubt the relentless hype it has received will carry it to victory.

What a sad state of affairs for our musical theatre.

I predict Gentlemans Guide will win best score, actually. I am certainly a fan of the Bridges score, but I can easily see Gentleman's Guide taking the award in a sweep. Especially since Bridges is going to close before the awards.

jas1234, if you loved the play so much, please get the title right. The Realistic Joneses. Plural of Jones.

Also, I'm pretty positive that Bridges will take score and Gentleman's Guide will take book. There's no contest, really.

I also thought that Bridges would take score, but after it's poor showing in the noms and the obvious adoration for Gentleman's I'm not so sure.

Anything can happen, it's always a contest.

I believe people have only mentioned they felt he was snubbed LAST YEAR for his Macbeth, not this year for Cabaret...

I am going to preface all my thoughts with this... I saw 37 of the 40 eligible shows this past season (missed Soul Doctor due to its short run, and also Betrayal and A Raisin in the Sun due to the utter lack of discount tix available for those shows, ironically both at the same theatre, one that does not offer standing room, which I found to be a travesty.) So I believe myself to be at least competent to make informed decisions on the Tony nominations/"snubs", and this theatrical season in general.

The only snub that I believe occurred was Michelle Williams not being nominated over MBJ in Joplin, that show was a joke, and while sung very well, thats kinda all it was, a glorified concert, while Williams gave an excellent portrayal of a very complicated character, and had to go against comparions of a woman who played the same role over 15 years ago, who seems to have given a tour-de-force performance.

I was very sad for Lisa O'Hare, in GGLAM, I thought she was brilliant in a role that could have easily gone charicature, happy for Lauren Worsham, just wish both could have gotten in, though it was a tough category, stacked with talent.
Performances that I am particularly happy were recognzied were those of Samuel Barnett, Reed Birney, Bryce Pinkham and Brian J. SMith, I thought they easily could have been overlooked, but am very glad that was not the case, as they gace some of my favorite performances of the year. I also want to add a note in Hedwig, I was not familiar with it before seeing this production, not even a song, but I loved it, it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen, and NPH was a fantastic Hedwig, call me crazy, but I have never been a big fan of his, didnt think he was very funny...just didnt get all the hype...until now. I am rooting for one of the GGLAM guys, but I cannot see NPH not winning not only for his performance, but for his recent years as Tony Host, and all that he has done to promote this community in recent years.

I am content with the Best Show categories actually, everyone seems to be talking about Bridges on the Musical side, it was good, yes the score is memorable, but the show just did not stick with me. As far as Joneses being subeed, I did not get that show at all, nothing happening was kind of an understatement, I walked out and my first words were "well that happened." So IM not too upset that it was passed over. I also predicted cabaret not getting nominated even though it was eligible, it won already, so I cant be too upset that it wont be incontention this year...it means one of the other 3 shows can.

As far as Technical elements go, I am very gald to see Machinal remembered that set and lightning design blew me away, and I am very happy to see Menagerie finally nab its first Tony nominations.

Finally as far as where my support lies, it goes to GGLAM. I loved the show, it was stuck with me since I saw it, its second preview. I loved the performances, the score is my personal favorite of this season, and I believe all its award nominations (OCC, DD, & Tony) to be very deserved. It feels like the little show that could, kinda sputteing along since November, but now it will all pay off, imho. After Midnight, was an enjoyable night at the theatre (After Midnight being the main competition with GGLAM) but it was simply not a musical, it was a revue and should not be competing against a show with a book.

Team GGLAM!
