"I thought both Romy Rosemont and Mike O'Malley were amazing in their scene, which packed one of the biggest emotional punches of the episode. I also respect the decision to not elaborate on Finn's death. I appreciate what Kurt said about the way he died being such a small part of Finn (or something to that effect) and from personal experience, totally agree."

Not saying how he died is not normal especailly when you are talking about a character who is 19 yrs old. People don't just normally die at 19 so it makes it even stranger the decision not to mention the cause of death. The writers did not have to make it due to drug addiction, there are other options. A brief statement how Finn died would have been sufficient and then move on with the episode.

I think they wanted to make this as much about Cory Monteith as "Finn" hence the "Remembering Cory" cards at every break. So they didn't want to make Finn a victim of a crime or an accident and they couldn't besmirch the memory of St. Finn by dealing with the messy emotions of a drug overdose.

But yes, it's completely irrational that no one would ask "Why?" if a 19-year old died suddenly.

I don't have the capacity to grieve for Finn. I'm still grieving Kyle.

I love when people want us to respect someone's death and then gloat in the idea that no one would respect our deaths.

All of the criticism here is spot on. His mother's monologue in the bedroom was wonderful and rang true. The rest of it was, to use Jordan's expression, "emotional porn." What they could have done was set the episode at his funeral, or even at a school memorial a few days after the funeral. But of course they sat around the school and moaned depressing songs and had a contest at who could cry the worst...I mean best. Lea Michele's "He was my person" line made me laugh, as did her overwrought, badly auto-tuned performance.

And they couldn't find a focus. At first I thought, Well I guess they're going to make Kurt that catalyst in this story here. But then it jumped to the other girl with some Puck stuff thrown in for time. And then Lea Michele came in to make sure we haven't forgotten about HER and HER person. That's not skillful writing. It was an unfocused, messy script.

Too much bad crying. A messy script. A lot of auto-tuned bulldink, and "Seasons of Love" to boot! Not surprised.

People not taking this episode seriously can not be misconstrued as people not taking Monteith's death seriously. People seem to be forgetting that it wasn't Finn who died in real life. He is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. That's all Glee seems to care about too, Finn as a character. I think it is VERY sad that Corey Monteith died, and he was very talented. But people accusing others of being "disrespectful" and "negative" for not taking the "memorial" episode seriously is just ridiculous. To some people it was a joke, which is why it is being treated as such.

To use my favorite expression of late, "as subtle as a box of rocks."

Romy Rosement was the sole standout.

I've been moved to tears by this show once or twice (Kurt's "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "Pure Imagination" at Sue's sisters funeral), but didn't shed a single one here. Maybe it's because I was never a big Cory or Finn fan, maybe it's that he OD'd, but more likely because the episode was so poorly written. Sue has a line that Finn wouldn't want his mourning to be "self-serving," but that's exactly what the entire episode was.

And Morrison's wracking sobs? I did that at my mother's funeral after everyone had left and they were about to move her casket to the hearse, but god, Matthew, that was just embarrassingly fake.

I agree with bwayphreak. Nobody was saying anything about Cory. It's mostly about how the episode about a fictional character was handled. Actually, I saw Matthew Morrison at 54 Below the day after Cory died. He sang a song before he started his real set and dedicated it to him. It was really nice and appropriate. I did tear up a little.

Exactly, almost all complaints was how badly written the show was and nothing about Cory or "Finn". I think sometimes people forget the saying that "less is more". In other words, they did not need a entire episode tribute. They could have had a couple of scenes at the end of a episode of different members of the cast being informed that "Finn" died and their reaction with appropiate music being played in the background. In later episodes, the cast could mention they miss "Finn" if a circumstance brings back a memory of him.

Essentially, they were conflating Finn and Cory into one, which is why most of the dialogue concerning him was broad and vague. Once again, Romy Rosement was amazing. I thought they should have used Kurt much more because Santana's story made me dislike her as a character since she and Finn never really did anything except sleep together once. When Rachel had her "He's my person" line, all I was thinking was - If you sing "People" right now I will cut a bitch (so... Lea Michele). It was so great and moving, then so awful, I still don't know if I liked it or hated it.

The episode was up and down (but some are way to harsh on it) but that's Glee for you. I thought the mums scene was wonderful, so was Santana and Sue's fight, Leah did a stunning job I thought.

~ That fight between Santana and Sue might actually be the most absurd thing ever filmed on that show. And that's saying a lot.

~It's "Lea". Show the nasty bad tempered holier than thou not even close to being as talented as she thinks bitch some respect.

Yes, I was moved, yes, the mom's scene was the best written and performed scene in the show, and yes, I've forgiven all the years of bad writing on "Glee" because the musical numbers remain very watchable.

Yeah, the "He's my person" is a recurring thing on Grey's. It always has and always will.

Yeah, that felt off to me too. Especially since Glee and Grey's are timeslot competitors. The sentiment was fine, but the phrasing of it really could've been so much better.

Re: the episode not being at Finn's actual funeral but set weeks later- I'm probably in the minority, but I would've felt more uncomfortable if they'd actually done a funeral scene. That blurs the lines between fiction and reality a little too much. I think it would've been just awful for the cast to have to film that. Yes, I realize this continues blurring the lines between Cory and Finn, but I think it would be all but impossible not to do that at least a little.

You don't have to have actual funeral scene with casket but you could have done the show after the cast returned home or to the HS after the funeral was over. IMO - Having a scene with Mr. Shuster returning to his home after attending the funeral and breaking down in tears makes more sense than him doing it weeks later.

I don't mind that they never stated how he died. Look at the Todd episode of Suddenly Susan. David Strickland committed suicide which can be viewed as just as "dishonorable" as a drunk overdose.

I know how someone dies in real life doesn't reflect on how their character is written out of the show. But I have to wonder if they were attempts to not glamorize drug use or suicide.

Does anyone remember if they said how Mr. Hooper died?
