If she trained and could develop her voice enough, Jennifer Lawrence would be a fierce Elphaba in the film adaption of Wicked.

They both are too loud. At least Delaria isn't doing that "my fierceness is painful" expression at the time.

I can't picture her as Elphie, but I can picture Brittany Snow as Glinda.

Lea for Elphaba all the way!!!

Gaga or Megan Hitty for Glinda.

But can Jennifer sing?

Lea obviously can't play Elphie, as it is a singing role.

"Lea obviously can't play Elphie, as it is a singing role."

You can say what you want about Lea but if theres one thing we all should agree on is that she has one of the best legit voices of our generation.

I am shocked that you people would prefer to train a movie star to sing it instead of using a real talented broadway star.

As we all have learned, not all real talented Broadway stars transfer well to movies: Gwen Verdon, Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters... on and on...

I thought we were talking about movie musicals. And all of Lansbury's Oscar nominations came before she was a Broadway star. My point is, a lot of Broadway stars in musicals don't transfer well to movie musicals. The magic that makes them glow on the stage just doesn't jump off the big screen. Some exceptions: Andrews, Streisand, Merman.

I don't know who to cast in Wicked - the Movie. You need two female stars who are bankable, to bring the movie fans to the theatres. To satisfy the producers. But they need to be young enough to be believable as college roommates. The best I can come up with is Zeta-Jones and Kidman. They have the star power, kinda. They can both sing, kinda. I don't think Nicole could handle Defying Gravity, that would have to go to Zeta-Jones, which makes her Elphaba. Despite her Oscar, I don't think Hathaway can half carry a major film. Thirty years ago, I'd have chosen Goldie Hawn and Liza.

So, they need to be age-appropriate for the college scenes, so let's cast 40-somethings?

Actually... that's not what you said.

A lot of college females are in their 40's. Remember, the original Broadway stars were in their 30's. Of course, the producers could always take a chance and go with Chenoweth and Menzel. But they better hurry.

Lady Gaga?!?! OMG, Glinda is supposed to be sweet, Gaga is not sweet and Lea, I don´t hink she can reach the highs.

As for age, I don´t get why everyone has such problems wih it. I just saw yesterday "The great and powerful OZ" and was shocked when I researched he ages of the actors. The one who played the evil witch is 43! I never thought that. So the technologie is so good that it can be hidden very well.

LOTS of college freshman women are in their 40's? In the dorms? On what planet?

On STAGE you can get away with much older actresses playing roles, not so much with film.

And lastly, Red, the theme of this thread (from the BWW regulars) is SARCASM.

Lady Gaga could be an interesting Elphaba if she doesn't play it as overly dramatic. She could sing it, for sure and she is such a dynamic performer.

I know that Julianne Hough has had her eye on that role for a long time now. This video is from 2009 and although she might not sound terrific here, the Rock of Ages movie showed that she has improved tremendously.

Also Kate Hudson might still be able to pass as a college student. Of course both of these would depend on the movie being made fairly soon.

Um, not only Angela Lansbury was a movie star before she became one on Broadway, but she has starred in a successful film musical after her Broadway success - Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), which won her a Golden Globe nomination and has become a classic, especially in UK. She was also great in The Pirates of Penzance (1983) and Jerry Herman's Mrs. Santa Claus (1996).
Not to mention that some of her MGM films in the 40's were also musicals: The Harvey Girls (1946), Till the Clouds Roll By (1946). She also sang in some of her non-musical films of that time, most notably in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945).

the jennifer lawrence idea is brilliant. she can act (something lea michelle cant do) is an oscar winner so brings prestige, could play younger and older. obviously depends is she can sing well enough for a movie. id rather have a brilliant actress than an amzing singer who cant act
