...what category would it be and who should tie?

I was reading the "Once vs. Newsies" thread and was wondering about ties for some time: 1) there are not many ties in Tony history, 2) everyone has their own opinion, 3) and in MY opinion there are a few of this year's categories with strong competition between the nominees.

Thoughts?

Best Actress in a Musical. I love Audra and her Bess sounds like a lock for Best Actress, but Jan Maxwell's Phyllis was perfection.

It's depressing to imagine a Broadway - musical and legit - of the last two decades without either McDonald or Maxwell. I greatly admired each in the 90s: the "this is the real stuff" thrill when I first saw Audra as a revelatory Carrie Pipperidge and Jan as a brilliant Christine Linde (John Simon also took note, saying this may have been the first Christine to rival her Nora - he may have said "surpass," but loving McTeer's stellar performance as I do, I can't go that far).

Best actor in a musical. Although, I'd be perfectly content if anyone in that category won.

Burnstein/Kazee & McDonald/Maxwell

Sidenote: I really hope they teach whoever presents the Best Actor award how to pronounce Kazee.

Newsies and Once tie for Best Musical.

I enjoyed Jan Maxwell's performance, but Audra was, frankly, better.

Is "Kazee" really that hard to pronounce? It's just as it looks. Just sound it out, everyone! If you could have a tie in any category for the 2012 Tony Awards...

I would say...Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play. Wow, what a lineup! Any would win in a weaker year.

Natasha Katz tying herself for "Follies" and "Once"! They were both brilliant designs.
A bit off-topic: Audra seems a lock, but almost everyone I have spoken to comments that Audra was her usual brilliant self, but she has enough awards. Could Jan Maxwell still pull this off? Thoughts?

Are you speaking to Tony voters or friends cause there is a HUGE difference. Everyone on the boards would agree Audra has enough awards so let Jan, who gives a performance equal to if not better than Audra, finally win her first, but we all know voters are going to award Audra with the Tony anyway.

Would voters not in LA shell out over there to see the Follies performances again to confirm votes or anything?

Id tie Milioti and Audra or Boykin and Grier in their respective acting catagorys

Let's not forget that Audra lost the Tony for Leading Actress in a Musical in 2000 for 'Marie Christine'... What happened there? She may lose it again this year.

Marie Christine was long since closed by the time of the Tonys that year, and had not been looked upon very favorably, by either critics or audiences.

While Aida was also not the critical darling that season, either, Heather Headley was receiving enormous amounts of praise and the show was still running, which is always an advantage when it comes to any awards.

Wasn't Marie Christine not very well-liked critically though? Or am I making that up? In any case, Heather Headley won for Aida that year.

I feel like Audra has all the buzz this year and I wouldn't mind if she wins her 5th Tony, but I also kind of wish Jan or Cristin Milioti would pull an upset.

I would also love for Steve Kazee and Danny Burstein to tie for leading actor in a musical but it's not going to happen.

Both lead acting in a musical categories are very tight, but in each, I have a SLIGHT leaning towards one winner (Maxwell and Burstein narrowly beating McDonald and Kazee). But the category I truly can't pick a winner in is Actress in a Play. Arianda and Channing...how in the hell do you choose? Of course, my fear is that Bennett will sneak in and take it. She may be wonderful, but I think the other two are incandescent and gave the two best performances of the year.

I think Linda Lavin has a good shot of winning actually. I think it's a 4-way race.

I'd like a tie in Best Actress in a Play. Nina Arianda and Tracie Bennett (add Linda Lavin if it can be a 3-way tie).

I don't agree. I think there may be others on the boards that don't agree. Why should the number of previous awards play a part in whether a new award is given? Why should sympathy for previous losses be the reason for picking one winner over another? It's simple: whoever delivered the better performance deserves the award.
