Without apology, this gay man supports the Salvation Army for the good work they have done for so many decades. With their assistance, my family once found their way out of a desperate situation. I will always be grateful to the Salvation Army, and I seek out their red buckets every Christmas season.
You might want to read their statement regarding the LGBT community before riding this wave of hate.
I have read it. And I still choose other charities. Their belief and philosophy stays the same . Glad they were of help. That IS what they are suppose to be doing.
Candace Cameron Bure is their spokesperson this year. Her brother Kirk is also involved. And you know how much they love us. So many other charities to contribute to.
I've heard that very little out of every dollar is actually used for charity. The rest goes to salaries and vehicles. The same is true for the American Red Cross--and they butcher my arm every time I donate blood through them.
I know the St. Vincent De Paul Society gets a bad rap from many, but I'm active in our local chapter (Yes, they know I'm gay) and I know every penny donated goes to charity.
Last week we provided over 100 Thanksgiving dinners to the less fortunate and numerous members of the society have volunteered to drive me to my cancer treatments.

I applaud Dame for bringing this up. If you entered the SA addiction recovery program and they discovered you were gay, you'd be thrown out.. and that was less than ten years ago.
I just checked their website and it "appears" that they have changed their policy. But I'm still suspect.
I know this much... if they have recently changed their policy it is only because people like Dame continued to make people aware that they were fine with letting you die if you were homosexual.
Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. - Eleanor Roosevelt
People have the right to donate to whatever organization they wish to. And they have the right to not donate to organizations if they don't agree with their policies or philosophies.
I guess the thing I have always found rather bothersome as a gay man though is how gays treat each other.
So when I see others questioning how this or that group of religious and/or heterosexual people treat gays or show some sort of discriminatory beliefs toward them, it's a little difficult to understand considering the things I see gays do and say to each other. When we can't even treat each other with respect and dignity it's a little difficult to critique others for doing the same.
Maybe they have changed their policies toward gays, but if that's the case good for them. After all, our former president wasn't for gay marriage until the summer before the election when he suddenly "evolved." Most likely for the gay vote.

First, it’s likely that Obama always supported gay marriage, but he couldn’t initially say so until he was already in office. He just couldn’t publicly say so before he was elected to his first term. After all, he was trying to become the first person of color elected to the land’s highest office. And his first name was Hussein. Right or wrong, he couldn’t afford to alienate potential voters. He has still done more for LGBTQ RIGHTS than any other president.
Secondly, gay men often are so hateful to one another due to internalized homophobia they learn from organizations like the Salvation Army.
Third, the Salvation Army (much like Chick-Fil-A) likely only changed its public stance due to the backlash. I have no doubt that behind closed doors they still have the same homophobic stances which they still wield over other vulnerable citizens seeking assistance.
Oh, another one of my kind foolishly defending a politician (and nothing more...) who refused to openly support our very basic right of marriage UNTIL it was most advantageous for his own personal aspirations? Yawn.

Weren’t you taking one post ago about gay men attacking each other and now you’re...what...shocker...calling my actions...foolish? I think that headband is too tight. Best loosen it. Fact is Obama supports our right to marry and the Salvation Army never will...Now be gone, troll.
Due to the backlash, Chic Filet claimed to have changed their policy, too. A report that came out s year or two after that brouhaha showed that in fact they changed very little. I still won’t eat their homophobic chicken, and I still won’t put a penny of my money into this group’s red kettles.
The fact that evolution denying Kirk Cameron and his obnoxious sister Candace are spokespersons this year just solidifies it for me. Plenty of other great charities to donate to.

He's a good, respectable person. Just because you don't agree with someone's politics or religious beliefs doesn't make them trash. I can't speak to his sister, but he is kind and open with people he meets. Don't judge someone until you've met them.

Evolution, like climate change, is not a “belief.” The science is irrefutable and there’s nothing to not “believe.” It’s true whether you “believe” it or not.
And the hateful things that Kirk Cameron says about gay people with regards to the right to marry makes him 100% trash in my eyes. I’d really rather not meet him, given what he “believes.” There’s a reason his career consists solely of bad “faith based” movies that no out beyond the Trump base wants to watch.
