Which of her movie/TV roles are worth seeking out?

Movie-wise I think I've only seen her in It Runs In The Family with Michael Douglas, in which she was the most interesting thing (for me anyway). As for TV, she was great in Ally McBeal and I loved seeing her in Ugly Betty, though she was underused.

Pennies from Heaven and The Jerk

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

She did a TV movie something like 23 years ago called DAVID that's amazing. It's a true story in which she plays the mother of a boy whose father sets him on fire. I believe it's on DVD and definitely worth checking out.

DAVID can be digitally bought on Amazon for $9.99.

Sounds fascinating. I want to see it. I love seeing Bernadette in dramatic roles.

Thanks.

Never heard of David, but sounds great - a real chance for her to show off her acting skills. Alas, amazon don't seem to stock it. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for it though.

I feel like I should've already seen Pennies From Heaven and The Jerk, so they're the next two I'm gonna go for, after Slaves of New York.

Edit - didn't notice the digital download of David...couldn't find it at all - thanks!

I really thought it was on DVD. I have a vhs tape of it from when it first aired somewhere. I think it was an "ABC Movie of the week". Remember those??

Go to her IMDB list, she was on like every sitcom and TV variety show in the 80's and 90's.
One of my favs is IMPROMTU directed by Lapine with Kevin Kline, Hugh Grant and Judy Davis about Chopin and George Sand.

Slaves of New York

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

She does great slapstick in Silent Movie, including a hilarious dance number near the end.

You can also see her as "Little Dee" in a little known action flick, VIGILANTE FORCE co-starring Kris Kristofferson, Jan-Michael Vincent and Victoria Principal.
