"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
It's better than last year's horrendous showing but still, they should be able to do better than this. And it's no excuse to say 'it's a live show' because tons of live shows are able to handle it.
The problem wasn't jut with the NYC broadcast. Where I am, the singing kept cutting out during Million Dollar Quartet's performance. It was so annoying.
"I would love for them to be back in a broadway theatre."
And then only nominated people and their guests would be able to attend? The great thing about Radio City is that it can hold so many people. And why shouldn't we try to include as many people as possible for the theatre's biggest annual celebration?
Definitely much improved over last year, no mics were turned on early giving us vocal warm ups from backstage.
ETA - I know firsthand how difficult it can be doing sound in NY. I've had trouble finding six clear frequencies for mics while performing at Town Hall, I can't imagine how long it must take to find as many clear frequencies for wireless that they must need for these shows.

It definitely wasn't just NYC area, I'm in DC and I could barely hear Chad Kimball in Memphis's performance. There was also some strange sound during Fela's portion of the opening number that wasn't coming out of the actress on stage...:)
"Rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."
-Neil Patrick Harris
It's really inexcusable how the sound got so messed up in *too* many places in tonight's broadcast. At least CBS got it right when GREEN DAY performed... Wah wah... ;o)
It was awful here on the West Coast. Whole sections where mics were out. Unseen peole singing. THe mixing was terrible.
"TheatreDiva90016 - another good reason to frequent these boards less."<<>>
“I hesitate to give this line of discussion the validation it so desperately craves by perpetuating it, but the light from logic is getting further and further away with your every successive post.” <<>>

Pretty much. I was like, "Wait... ventriloquist?"
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I?
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
