blaxx --- a tiny little show called Wicked isn't on your list.

EDIT: Oh, I see you're limiting it only to adapted movies ... (and I still argue that Wicked takes as much of its adaptation from the MGM Oz film as it can legally get away with, but still that's not what this thread is about)

Kink Boots recouped already? And sadly yes, Women on the Verge should be on the flop list as well as Bring It On. And probably White Christmas and A Christmas Story.

"A Christmas Story."

could that really be considered a flop? It was a limited run, and I seem to remember it did quite well.

Women on the Verge was non-for-profit, so it doesn't count as a flop. I also didn't include limited runs.

The thread title should read 'Failed Broadway Movie to Musicals.

Therefore I would say Legally Bonde recouped handsomely from its US Tour, UK and Australian productions picking up Olivier and Helpmann awards for best musicals along the way.

I think Legally Blonde actually lost money in the UK. Supposedly it started out strong, got some awards, but then dropped off and didn't recoup.

Bridges was based (more) on the original novel by Robert James Waller, it never listed the film adaptation as its source material.

For the people saying Carrie it did flop on broadway and shut down really quickly (biggest flop in Broadway history) but it was still a really awesome musical. I like both the 2012 version and the 1988 version, disappointing others didn't though. Carrie is my favourite musical (kinda why my name is LukeyWhite)

Thrilled that my flop musical "Desperately Seeking Susan" didn't make the list (thanks to it opening and closing in London). But here's a quick look at 125+ movie>musicals. Did I miss any? Other than my own? : )

There's currently a very long thread on one, ROZA. Of course that was also a book before it was a movie.

Why just from 1995 on?

CARRIE counts.

Lawrence D. Cohen, wrote the screenplay and the book for the musical. In fact, some of the dialogue from the screenplay was used in the musical.

I just started with the list from the time I felt there was a recent increase in the "movie to musical" trend on Broadway.

Yes, there were many before including Carrie.

West end-

The Witches of Eastwick came and went in the blink of an eye. As did The Lord of the Rings musical.

BobbyBubbi, Witches of Eastwick may not have made money in London, but it lasted far longer than the blink of an eye - 15 months. And it's been performed all over the world. But it may still qualify for this list. As for Lord of the Rings, I'd say the novel would get precedence over the film as the primary source. But yes, major floppo.

Out of all the flops, which (if any) will get a second life in regional theatres? I'm not asking about high schools, they will do anything. But out of all the flops, are there any shows that you think will be consistently done by the major regional theatres in the US?

For instance, "Big Fish" is already being done in Chicago. Do you think other theatres will as well.
