At first, Betsy not continuing with "Frozen" made me upset. But if her not playing Elsa means we get her in "Waitress" AND "Carousel" then, golly, I'm so glad. I so hope it's her.
Rudin's production of Dolly is legendary, so I wouldn't brush Carousel off quite so easily yet. That being said, Sher is one of the best musical directors, if not THE best musical director working right now on Broadway. If the production is well cast and the design lush, it will probably take the prize this season, especially considering O'Brien's spotty history. I do expect Joshua Henry to probably win the Tony for Best Lead Actor.
Just curious, have you heard anything about Dreamgirls making a transfer this season, JIMG3?
Not to mention that before the current revival of Hello, Dolly! started performances, director Jerry Zaks had a very inconsistent track record for the past 20 years, yet was able to find himself a return to form here. Though the difference is that Zaks had already proven to be successful with reviving musical comedies in the past with Anything Goes, Guys & Dolls, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Jack O'Brien on the other hand, his more successful work lately has pretty much been his collaborations with Nathan Lane.
I could see carousel winning all the acting awards with the revival and all the tech awards going to MFL.

You realize these aren't the only two shows on Broadway this season, right?

Yeah, but they're the only two that've been announced so far that are actually worth anyone's time

The Band's Visit?
Not to mention Spongebob and Frozen have some serious money behind them to allow for some amazing technical stuff. I bet they'll get most of the technical Tony's.
I've always thought of Julie as a subtle, less standoutish role, but if anyone can make it award worthy, it's Jessie stinkin Mueller! Leading actress seems really competitive already with Jessie, Katrina Lenk, Caissie, Patti, Erika H, Taylor Louderman (unless she's petitioned for featured), and whomever our Eliza turns out to be all in the running! I did think that Lenk was the preseason favorite, though?
Though if Amber Riley ends up coming in with Dreamgirls this season, the race may already be over.

Not to get too off topic, am I missing something with Amber Riley's performance? From what I've seen, I appreciate she seems to be a more confident Effie and she obviously has a great voice, but I see no pain, no desperation...almost no acting. Is she different in context? I wish Jennifer Hudson would reprise the role - no one's voice cuts through me like hers.
I don't know, but I'm more excited about Carousel and Once on this Island.

That might be what you see, but I doubt that will be the case. If LCT snags Colin Firth as Henry Higgins, and there's still a very strong possibility that they will, I don't see Joshua Henry taking best actor in a revival.

What??? Don't even. Colin Firth is a fine actor, but there is noooo way he would beat Joshua Henry, who is due for the award by now.
Regarding Amber, I don't think voters would be too keen for her if she keeps the 5 performance schedule...

I think it will all come down to how both productions will be received. At this point, My Fair Lady looks far more promising given Bartlett Sher's amazing track record with revivals.
Carousel on the other hand, it's going to have a whole lot to live up to given how acclaimed the last revival from 1994 was. I also think Jack O'Brien's track record as of late should be a cause for alarm.
LOL'ing at people fighting about which hypothetically cast actor would hypothetically win a hypothetical Tony.
Amber Riley's performance is so well recieved in London because many audience members over there weren't alive or in NYC during the original run of the show, so they didn't see Jennifer Holiday's performance. Riley doesn't bring anything new to the part and is essentially just giving us Holiday's performance, but without the raw passion. It's really nothing special. She sings it wonderfully though.

this is awhile back, and i suppose it DOES look like betsy will play carrie, but phillipa soo *did* sing mister snow at a concert sometime ago. very beautiful, and would love to see her in the role: http://dailyphillipasoo.tumblr.com/post/130831777800/itsagutthing-lyrics-and-lyricists-series-at-92y
Ooh, I loved that! Phillipa would be a magical Carrie, as well! It's such a fun, rich role.

Pretty sure the 2018 Tony Awards are not hypothetical, but otherwise I agree
