Although Mr. Warchus said he he wanted someone tall and physically imposing for Miss Trunchbull, the casting call initially included men and women. (The role could still be played by a woman, he said.) More important was the actor’s approach. “I wasn’t looking for a comedian,” Mr. Warchus explained. “I was looking for a great actor, a psychological actor.” Miss Trunchbull, he said, is “like the characters in Dickens, real people who happen to be extreme.”

There is lot of well crafted media trained response that has come since but the reality is that casting a man gave a sense of the grotesque and a sense of ‘other’

Carvel brilliantly played the role as a woman, rather than a man in a dress but there was an underlying sense that something was off. That gives a sense of something not quite as it seems, something you can’t put your finger on and something potentially dangerous.

The same reason why numerous other female villains are played as men because it gives a sense of the grotesque.

Soon after the show opened Cameron Mackintosh began considering men for the role of Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins, although the idea was abandoned.

There is no way, on the face of the earth that any professional attached with a show can utter the above now because it would destroy them so the only possible response is ‘we considered actors of both genders’ whilst they hope to God that nobody pushes further.

It’s not going to be a popular reply but the above is the truth of it and whilst the industry is changing, that change still comes slow. The industry itself might be made up of left leaning, open minded liberal types but the reality is that ticket buyers cover a wider demographic and most don’t care at all about such politics. It’s why Cameron Mackintosh can get away with saying that casting trans actors is just a gimmick, whilst outraging and offending many people and still sitting comfortably with no fear that he is going to lose the bulk of his audience.

The Matilda production team have to play a little safer because they don’t have his millions to fall back on but even if they were all cancelled, the film would probably still do well.

I think more men should play women and more women should play men.

There was exactly one sanctioned production in which Miss Andrew was cross-cast; non-binary actor Mason Alexander Park played the role (as well as several other male and female roles) before attaining fame as Hedwig and moving to TV success.

Interesting. I had assumed it probably happened regionally in the states, I didn’t know they did it. I loved them in The Sandman.

It was in Britain that Cameron started with the idea, I don’t think they actually called anyone in but it was, as ever, one of his ‘all hands on deck! This is what we now all work on’ ideas that then fizzled out

And that's nice, but as was said Bertie Carvel (and subsequent actors) was cast in Matilda as a means to evoke an unsettling nature of Trunchbull. Something that is easier to make work on Camera than it is on stage. So you cast a 6 Foot Tall Man to be an imposing woman on stage. Do I think the answer to that is put Emma Thompson in a fat suit and a bunch of prosthetics? Not really. If it's getting to the point where you have to drastically change the shape of someone's face to make seem "Ugly" you've kind of lost the plot. It didn't take much to make Pam Ferris intimidating. Minimal makeup and pulled her hair back and they turned this 5'7" woman into an opposing force.I think this movie is trying to do TOO much. Like they took the show and the fact that Trunchbull was played a man and said "Well naturally, we have to give her more masculine features. We have to square off her jaw." Emma Thompson looks very... fake.

Here is some awesome audio of Mason in the role, they were 19 at the time and Cameron had to sign off on the production, which led to him attempting to recreate the gender non-conformity with the UK production that followed a year or two later, and then abandoned. The RANGE, like a more vocally acrobatic Trunchbull

So excited. I’m hoping the movie is every bit as wonderful as the stage version with Warchus at the helm of both. It’s one of my favorite musicals of all time, so I have very high hopes.

Also very excited for this. ‘Twas a swell time when I saw it on Broadway.

But most of all, I’m thrilled to see Minchin get wider recognition outside of the UK and Australia. I can’t even begin to describe how many of his songs are lyrical poetry, from “Thank You God” to “Cont” and everything in between.
