I won’t say more because I’m sure they’re still working, but this ain’t it.

Has anyone seen the show recently?  This negative buzz is shattering and making me think I need to get rid of our tickets when I am in the city - I think opens next week so I'd imagine press previews have begun?

I have never seen the play or the film but love Williams but a play being both BORING and TERRIBLE as has been mentioned on this thread as me concerned that I should try to see and see something else

I saw the show last night and sorry to say nothing has improved based on the comments i've read.  The first act is SLOW and TERRIBLE. AND LOUD.  Both my and my companion had headaches from the screaming children during at intermission.  And the set and lighting. oof.

I cannot speak to the 2nd act because we got the hell out of there toot suite.

Act I, I found, dragged to an absurd degree and there is one scene with two characters who literally never reappear that, while amusing for a moment, goes on for far too long and doesn't advance the plot all that much. If you can make it through Act I, though, I thought that Act II was absolutely delightful: fun, comedic, and romantic all at once, and it actually let both Marisa Tomei and Emun Elliott shine a little bit.

I'm glad that I saw it for completeness sake as a Tennessee Williams buff, but I'm not sure the play itself is salvageable, even in the hands of the greatest directors alive today. You could probably do it with about 15 minutes' worth of Act I and then the full Act II run as a one-act play, but I doubt the estate would permit it. So unfortunately this is what we're left with: a piece that does not do its players' talent justice.

Yeah, if you can swap your tickets out, it's worth doing it. There's enough good theatre in NYC right now that this one really can be given a pass.

Maybe there's a reason no one bothers reviving this play anymore. laugh

i do believe if you didnt enjoy it, its because of the play and not the production. i went in skeptical and ended up enjoying it for the great marisa performance, the fun chemistry, and for what they tried to do to make it a fresh production. i was thinking about the one part of 'nine' almost the whole time

I think that's a fair perspective. I saw it for two reasons: first, I wanted to see Marisa Tomei onstage, and second, I am a huge fan of Tennessee Williams' work. I don't regret going on either account, and the performances were great, but I really do think this is one of TW's weaker works, and that accounts for a lot of the criticisms of the current production.

Saw this and didn’t think it was as bad as a lot of the posts. I had no former experience with this play...had never even seen the movie. It has been a long time since I saw Orpheus Descending, but the first act reminded me a little of the first act of OD in that not much happened, other than a lot of seemingly meaningless talk.

I did enjoy Act 2 mildly and i also enjoyed Marisa Tomei’s performance. But after seeing Slave Play and The Sound Inside the period days, it seemed so hopelessly trivial. It would be interesting to understand why Tennessee Williams wrote it in the first place.

Jarethan - I’m loving reading your reviews of all the shows you’re seeing. What else are you seeing?

Seeing Betrayal and TKTS tonight, because there is nothing I want to see that I don’t think I’ll be able to get at TKTS, probably the Tracy Letts play. Was interested in Height of the Storm to see Eileen Atkins, but I didn’t like The Father and am not sure I am in the mood for a play that appears to be about Alzheimer’s. Slave Play and The Sound Inside were as intense as anything I’ve seen in a long, long time...and set the bar incredibly high. Will post.

I saw this tonight and I’m just shocked at the negative reviews from people so far. While this isn’t Williams’ best play, this was a damn good production with uniformly excellent performances and I honestly loved every second of it.

I saw the production towards the end of its run and enjoyed it despite the bizarre staging. The dozens of pink flamingos on stage, the lack of clarity about where doors were in Serafina's house and the children running about at random. Marisa's performance was really quite good.

Why has this thread popped up after a few years?

Yeah I was wondering about that too. It was just there for awhile before your reply, I wonder if there was a deleted reply?

(Personally, I didn't need to be reminded of that production, but it was fun to read the replies again, including my own.)
