Actually, Gaga as Louise and Madonna as Rose. It would be a terrible but I would watch it.

It is Joel Silver producing... I have heard "rumors" that Mel Gibson is playing HERBIE.. He sang in Pochontas 2, is trying to refurbish his image. I don't see BARBRA going for it but she sang a duet with Don Johnson once...

Yes, she sang with Don Johnson once and she makes fun of herself (or Sondheim makes fun of her) for doing so in her version of "Putting It Together".

Am I the only one who saw Streisand's TV special from the Village Vanguard? She is finally showing her age (gracefully, but still) and her singing was pretty tentative, even though she restricted her songlist to mostly lush Marvin Hamlisch ballads.

I know some have speculated that the tracks for a Streisand GYPSY were laid down long ago, but I'll be very surprised if she can belt a Jule Styne score two or three years from now or whenever the film finally gets made.

(BK, I'm not ignoring your point about press releases. I assume this entire discussion is hypothetical.)

Yeah, but she was doing... I mean... dating Don Johnson at the time. It was he who introduced Streisand to "The Prince of Tides." He would read passages of it to her in bed. When she optioned the film rights it was for the two of them to star in together. But by the time it filmed they had broken up. As cheesy as it sounds I'd kind of like to see James Brolin play Herbie. It would be nice to see them work together. And I still want Megan Hilty for June!!!

There couldn't be a reference in "Putting It Together" about the Don Johnson duet. The duet happened AFTER The Broadway Album was recorded. The Broadway Album was 1985 and Till I Loved You (which included the Johnson duet) was 1988.

Thanks for the correction, Bob. I could swear I've heard her sing something with a mention of "recording/singing with a hunk" that seemed like a reference to Johnson, but, damn, if I can find it now.

I think James Brolin playing Herbie would be like William Hurt playing Valentin.* Some men (and women) are just too good looking to play certain roles. Herbie is a nice guy, but a schlub.

Brolin may have married Streisand, but his Herbie wouldn't marry her Rose. IMO, obviously.

*I corrected the name of Hurt's role from Albin to Valentin. I had the wrong gay character.

^ I actually might like him as Herbie if he was cast with someone who didn't tower over him.

Gaveston,
The reference you're thinking of was from her 1994 Concerts. She did a version of I'm Still Here with different lyrics. "I've been through showtunes, I've been through funk and it stunk, but I'm here. Hit songs with no tunes, heavy duets with a hunk, is he here?"

I gotta say in the trailer for "Guilt Trip" she looks twenty years younger than her real age, fifteen at the most. She could easily be Seth Rogen's grandmother, but she looks plausible as his mom.

The hunk was Barry Gibbs, folks. Guilty. Big duet, from back in the day.

Thank you so much, nicholas24. I'm never sure whether I'm actually remembering something or the Alzheimer's has finally kicked in. LOL.

Playbilly, I bow to your knowledge of Streisand, but do we know the reference was to Barry Gibbs? Gibbs was a successful singer in his own right; I thought of Don Johnson because, though not untalented as an actor, he was primarily known for his sex appeal.

"It is Joel Silver producing... I have heard "rumors" that Mel Gibson is playing HERBIE.. He sang in Pochontas 2, is trying to refurbish his image."

He sang in Pocahontas (1). Mel's brother, Donal Gibson played John Smith in the video sequel, but he didn't sing any of Larry Grossman's songs in the sequel. Billy Zane who played John Rowlfe, Jean Stappleton and Judy Kuhn sang the brief film score (one of the slightly more decent part of a typically awful direct to video Disney sequel from that period).

I'm so curious about the Julian Fellowes' screenplay that I really want this to happen. Why pursue Streisand for this though? I'm sure at least 5 A-listers who are age-appropriate would jump at the chance to play this role.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I've yet to read Arthur Laurents' new book, but apparently, he's got some great stuff to say about Babs and feels that she'll do a great job and says that role of Rose is "ageless." I think they must have figured out a way to make it work. I dunno, but I feel that if the character has two little children in the first 20/30 minutes of the story, they sort of need to not be over 50. It just doesn't make any sense.

They could always change the character to Grandma Rose, instead of Mama Rose.

SO..everyone is okay with Meryl Streep(who is 63) playing the Beautiful and YOUNG witch, but not okay with Barbra playing a Mother?.....yeah that make sense -__-. Im Not a big Streisand fan but I think it's foolish to doubt her when everyone knows she could knock this character out of the park.

Well, The Witch isn't required to be a real birth mother to Rapunzel and it's a fairy tale. With a story as realistic and gritty as Gypsy, it's just gonna make people scratch their heads. However, if I was a 12 year old who had no idea who Babs was, I'd still assume she could have a young child. Maybe. She looks damn good.

Honestly, I support the movie. The other two adaptations were horrible - what with the '62 version's weird script revisions and Roz's lack of singing chops and the '93 version's gaudy sets and Midler hamming it up like there was no tomorrow. I'm not saying this version will be any better, but at least it got Laurents and Sondheim's approval. If they thought it would work and Babs could pull it off, I trust them.

Even if the movie sucks, we'll have another Broadway revival in a year or so to wash the bad taste out of our mouths. It's not gonna hurt the show. It'll be revived a million more times.

Gaveston,
Well, that's what we have crazy obsessive fans for.
As for who the hunk in question was, I think the most obvious answer would be Barry Gibb, because of the huge success of that song/album. But, who's to say?
It could be Don Johnson.
It could be Omar Sharif.
It could be Kris Kristoferson.
Hell, it could be Walter Matthau.

I don't think anybody ever called Walter Matthau a "hunk". LOL.

Until an obsessive fan comes along to correct me, the revised lyric makes more sense (and is funnier) if we are talking about someone who did not have a recording career in his own right. So (again, to me) that leaves out Gibb and Kristoferson.

From his beginnings nude off-Broadway and in men's magazines through MIAMI VICE and his early movie career, Don Johnson was known mostly for his looks. The duet with Streisand was very much a surprise at the time (with considerable talk about the lady bringing her boyfriend to the recording studio) and the reference makes the most sense if it is to him. (Not that Johnson was such a bad pop singer, just so seemingly unlikely.)

Carol Matthau, aka Holly Golightly thought Walt was a hunk.

Babs passed on Sally Bowles, Oye, let's imagine that.

By the way, Laurents came to his senses after he died and WITHDREW his permission for Streisand to do this movie. If it happens it will be the ULTIMATE vanity project. It will make Lucy in Mame look like a brilliant stroke of casting.
