If this play is based on the Gnostic gospel, THE TESTAMENT OF MARY MAGDALENE, and is at all representative, then the "controversial" elements are that after death, Jesus first appears to a woman (Mary), and that he does so in spirit rather than bodily form.

That anyone needs to protest such a work in this day and age is just, well, sad.

No the play is based on the Virgin Mary's life in Ephesus after the Gospels. I've seen the original Garry Hynes/Marie Mullen production in Dublin. It is challenging and presents Mary as a complex and real human being. It asserts that she is being controlled by the apostles and that her views on Jesus life are being distorted by them for their own purposes. I would not however consider it blasphemous or controversial. The reaction in Dublin was mature and considered and there were no protests.

Once again our country showing how ridiculous we are, even the mention of anything remotely related to jesus and people go crazy, sometime I hate how uber religious parts of this country are

Gaveston I'm no Gospel expert, but doesn't the resurrected Jesus first appear to women in all of them? And in at least one/some to a named Mary Magdalene? Not in spirit form I understand.

:: sigh ::

I doubt many of you remember, but when LIFE OF BRIAN was released, there were huge protests, all from people who gleefully admitted they're never even seen the movie but they *knew* it was blasphemous! because, after all, what else could it be???

And we think the Taliban is bad.

Those were extras hired by the producers to get some press about the show.

No, the three women who go to the tomb to attend to his body find an angel waiting for them there who tells them that they won't find Jesus there because he has been resurrected.

>> "What's wrong with protesting?"

Well, it would help to know *why* you're protesting in the first place.

As for who the women were, dpeends on which gospel you read. Matthew says it was Mary Magdelene and "the other Mary", which may be a reference to the sister of Lazarus. It's also suggested that there were others who were unnamed.

...yes you do.

And it isn't only this country. Religious folk in the UK didn't exactly throw a party for Jerry Springer: The Opera.

If you know it goes against your believes, you shouldn't see it just for the sake of protesting it.

You have a right to do it whether or not you happen to think it's stupid. The First Amendment doesn't have a stupidity clause.

You have the "right" to protest, of course!! Whether you should is a judgment call. Don't get righteously progressive folks! People on this very board have said they'd boycott Mel Gibson and Kirk Cameron films...

True. You do have the right to protest something you havent seen, but everyone else has the right to look at you and laugh and laugh and laugh...

And for those possibly offended by my Taliban remark, given how much the religious right is trying to control everyone's lives, from the womb on out, they may not be as extreme but they certainly hold much of the same mindset. They;re right, everyone else is wrong, and they're gonna continue to push it until another aboriton doctor in Florida is killed over it.

And I'll step away from this thread now, because this kind of BS really pisses me off.

Just for the record, I don't applaud those kinds of protests, unless it's something 100% blasphemous or satanic. It really boils my blood when they protest Gaga!!

It ain't art until it's controversial!

Whatever, Christianity is all based on lies and unproven theories. It started as a political system to rule the masses. Personally, this makes me want to see the play more. Hardcore Christians CANNOT accept different versions, more human versions, of their fairy tales. I think it's less about God and more the idea that they've been duped.
