DMV Premiere of THE VIEW UPSTAIRS to be Presented at Iron Crow Theatre

Iron Crow Theatre, Baltimore's professional queer theatre company, will bring one of the first productions of The View Upstairs to the DMV, running May 29 through June 14, 2026 at Baltimore Theatre Project (45 W Preston St, Baltimore, MD 21201). The View Upstairs is a fiercely original, soul-stirring tribute to queer history, community, and resilience. With a lush, genre-blending score by Max Vernon, this work transports audiences to 1973 New Orleans and into the Upstairs Lounge—a vibrant gay bar and haven for queer joy, chosen family, and radical self-expression.

Inspired by the true story of the deadliest attack on the LGBTQ+ community in U.S. history prior to the Pulse Nightclub tragedy, The View Upstairs reclaims a moment many tried to erase. It invites us to gather both in celebration of and in solidarity with those we lost, and challenges us to confront what allowed the world to look away.

Presented as part of our Season of Survival, this production asks: as queer life evolves, are we truly better off as a community, or have we lost something along the way? Don't miss this haunting, joyful, and defiant musical that reminds us survival means remembering, loving, and choosing each other again and again.

The View Upstairs brings to a close what has been a landmark season for Iron Crow Theatre. The company's 25/26 Season of Survival opened with a record-breaking, critically acclaimed run of Next to Normal at the M&T Bank Exchange and now turns its attention to a story that sits at the very heart of that theme. For a company whose mission has always been to center queer narratives, there is no more fitting way to close a season centered on survival than with a musical that transforms tragedy into defiance and erasure into celebration.

Three seating options offer distinct experiences:

  • Side Orchestra ($35) and Rear Orchestra ($44) provide the full scope of the production at the best value;
  • Front Orchestra ($64) offers an intimate, high-impact viewing experience inches from the action;
  • Lounge Seating ($89), the most exclusive option at only 10 seats per performance, places audiences onstage inside the UpStairs Lounge itself with premium table and bar-style seating, exclusive pre-show access to the onstage bar, a fully immersive 360° experience, a signature moment with the cast, and a branded keepsake shot glass.

The View Upstairs features book, music, and lyrics by Max Vernon. The production is directed by Artistic Director Sean Elias and produced by Managing Director Natka Bianchini, with music direction by Michelle Henning. Additional creative team members include intimacy direction by Shawna Potter, fight direction by Mallory Shear, set design and fabrication by James V. Raymond, lighting design by Thomas P. Gardner, costume design by Xorlali Plange, sound design by Zach Sexton, props design by Soph Riscigno, and drag consultation by Brandon Ross. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3:00pm. Runtime is approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. This production contains themes of homophobia, violence, grief, trauma, drug use, suicide, mental illness, and loss, as well as explicit language and sexual content. Design features loud sound effects, haze, props that create sounds similar to gunshots, and bright, strobing, and reflective lighting effects. Viewer discretion is advised.
