One Yellow Rabbit (OYR) is thrilled to present Verb Theatre's bliss (the birthday party play), written by and starring Jamie Dunsdon. OYR audiences will remember this production as one of the stand-out, sold-out hits from the 2020 High Performance Rodeo. The show will run October 28 - November 7, 2020 in the Big Secret Theatre at Arts Commons.

Calgary Opera is pleased to welcome Jonathan Brandani, a sought-after rising star of the classical music world, as the company's new Artistic Director. Calgary Opera audiences will remember Maestro Brandani as the conductor of the Calgary Opera's box office record-shattering 2019 production of Puccini's La Bohème.

This year, instead of performing in one location, Theatre Calgary is taking their show across the city with the aptly named: 'Shakespeare on the Go'. Throughout the month of August, a rotating cast of three actors are set to perform in various locations, including The Public Library, Heritage Park, and Lougheed House.

Broadway Across Canada has announced that Broadway performances are scheduled to recommence at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in January 2022 featuring ANASTASIA. Also slated for the upcoming season are HAMILTON and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. COME FROM AWAY is available as season option.

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation is pleased to announce that artist Faye HeavyShield (Blood Reserve, Kainaiwa Nation, AB), writer and filmmaker Cheryl Foggo (Calgary, AB), and dance choreographer Vicki Adams Willis (Calgary, AB), have been selected to receive the 2021 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Award.

Alberta Theatre Projects, celebrating 49 years this coming season, is airing the seventh and final reading of their 2021 Playwrights Projects on Friday May 28th 2021 over Zoom. The company is known for original plays and adaptations of Canadian works, pulling from artists all over the country. I sat down with Interim Executive Director (formerly General Manager) Kyle Russell to talk about how the company has navigated the leap to digital media.

Stefanie Barnfather is the Artistic Director and Co-Creator of SideNote Theatre, a company comparatively still in its infancy but quickly garnering attention. She is a creator and educator based in Calgary with a strong passion for empowering emerging artists. Since opening their doors in October 2019, SideNotes’s mandate is centered around creating, workshopping and producing original plays and musicals in a collaborative and thought-provoking manner.

This week, Theatre Calgary's Stafford Arima and Maya Choldin explained how their company is paving the way for emerging artists in the new digital age of theatre. Theatre Calgary (which is known for its cross-country collaboration and interpretations of old and new plays and musicals) jumped into the digital scene fairly quickly following the ending of in-person performances.

I sat down with a few of the companies in Calgary’s theatre scene to talk to them about how they’ve survived the lockdown. Over the next few weeks, I’ll introduce you to them. First up: JP Thibodeau is the Artistic Director of StoryBook Theatre, one of Canada’s largest TYA (theatre for young audiences) companies.

Alberta Theatre Projects is thrilled to announce Playwrights Projects 2021, a series of seven online workshop readings of new Canadian plays by members of the Alberta Theatre Projects Playwrights Unit. As a long-time friend and collaborator with Alberta Theatre Projects, Kadri is stepping into this role to support the company during this transitional period. Kadri joins Interim Executive Director Kyle Russell, formerly the General Manager of Alberta Theatre Projects.

Alberta Theatre Projects is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Darcy Evans, Executive and Artistic Director. Evans died on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 surrounded by loved ones. Evans had been battling cancer since March, and he unfortunately lost this fight yesterday afternoon.

Theatre Calgary's Board of Directors are pleased to announce the appointment of Maya Choldin as the new Executive Director of Theatre Calgary. She will officially join the theatre on November 2, 2020

Executive and Artistic Director Darcy Evans announced today that Alberta Theatre Projects has made the decision to postpone its 2020-21 Season, which had been set to run from September to May in the Martha Cohen Theatre. Programming will move to the 2021-22 Season.

As we continue to navigate the challenges of scheduling touring Broadway during this unprecedented time, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our current season to begin in January 2021. 

Alberta Theatre Projects and The Grand Theatre are announcing that Cabaret will unfortunately no longer be taking place in the Martha Cohen Theatre as originally planned from April 14 to May 2, 2021. This is due to The Grand Theatre postponing the entire tour of their acclaimed production for the upcoming Canadian theatre season, including performances originally scheduled to conclude Alberta Theatre Projects' 2020-2021 season.

Alberta Theatre Projects is thrilled to announce Playwrights Projects 2020, two weeks of concurrent digital workshops of three new Canadian plays, from June 8 to June 20, 2020. The initiative features Undressed by Louise Casemore, Boom Baby by Natalie Meisner, and a new adaptation of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan by Andrew Scanlon.

The festival for fresh faces forges their way through the at-a-distance and digital foliage. Celebrating its 15th year, the IGNITE! Festival of Emerging Artists, presented by Sage Theatre, is adapting its format in response to the COVID19 pandemic.

Following on the heels of its awarding-winning, inaugural production, WAITING FOR GODOT, Black Radish Theatre presents MESA (March 19 a?" April 5, 2020). Written by Calgary's own Doug Curtis, the production is directed by Andy Curtis and features fellow ensemble members Duval Lang, Tyrell Crews, Christopher Hunt, and Calgary musician, Chantal Vitalis.
