Jill Ripa

Jill Ripa

Jill Ripa is a playwright and director based in San Antonio, TX. Before committing to writing full time, she taught high school and middle school theatre for seventeen years in Texas and Colorado. She loved watching how the power of story onstage empowered students to invent creative and challenging stories for their own lives and the lives of their communities. In July of 2022, she earned her MFA in directing from the University of Idaho as a way to continue enhancing her passion for Theatre and the arts. Currently, she is focusing on writing plays that tend to tell women’s stories from various historical eras. Eras where those stories often exist in the shadows. Her play, Gone But Not Forgotten was selected for the TxETA Playfest, and she is working to produce it in Texas soon.

What a glorious Sunday evening out at San Pedro Springs Park for Shakespeare in the Park with The Classic Theatre and San Pedro Playhouse! We had the unique opportunity this year to sit at one of the VIP tables with some friends, and we had a great evening of perfect weather and a wonderful play. What a great way to enjoy Shakespeare’s works in a beautiful environment, and I always appreciate how this theatre pays great attention to detail and creates such high caliber experiences for their guests!

Overall, we were glad we gave this show another chance. It will never be my favorite show, but it doesn’t have to be. It had some beautiful moments and some important messages about knowing what you are meant to offer the world and about not giving into doubt. Despite any negative opinions I have of the show, it did give us that. And that’s a pretty powerful thing to give.

This adaptation placed the story in Hispanic culture and heightened the themes of the sacredness of family and returning to your roots. Like the original, the production sought to remind audiences of the meaning behind the holiday madness.

The show’s depiction of high school life was completely accurate (just like the movie). And the lessons Tina Fey wrote into the script were as important as ever. The stage came to life with teenage energy and angst, along with some incredible dance numbers!

In June, we were able to have an epic date night watching the Ballet Folklorico at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. We were simply amazed by the production and how the audience responded with such joy and pride to all the color, movement, and cultural storytelling. What a joy, then, on Saturday to experience a performance such as this again right here in San Antonio!
