After spending years studying and teaching the metaphysical poetry of John Donne, a renowned but uncompromising English professor has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. During her illness as a patient in an experimental chemotherapy program, she struggles with doctors and family, ultimately reassessing her life with such profundity, grace, and humor that she transforms herself and all those around her.
