The 14th Street Y is has announced the Teen Theater Summer Institute with programming partners Amas Musical Theatre, MCC Theater and the Red Fern Theatre Company.

For two weeks this summer (July 8-19), students entering 6th to 9th grade will study with theater experts from a variety of fields and perspectives. Programming will include discipline-specific instruction in the areas of musical theater, acting and theater for social justice.

Teaching artists of the 14th Street Y will lead various master classes, including physical theater, script analysis and training for high school theater program auditions. Camp will culminate in the presentation of student work for family and friends at the Off-Broadway Theater at the 14th Street Y, a newly renovated, state-of-the-art black box theater.

"The 14th Street Y is so thrilled to be working with these amazing programming partners. We have created a unique experience for middle school students to interact with innovative artists, and learn life skills in the process," Camp Director Becky Skoff, Manager of the Theater at the 14th Street Y, explains. "Nothing can replace the quality of learning from a fantastic artist, and with these partners, the talent of the teachers we are bringing in are far beyond your average theater camp experience."

Prospective students interested in meeting some of the teaching artists and learning more about the Institute are invited to attend two free workshops hosted by the 14th Street Y:

Actor Skills: Wednesday April 10th from 5:00-6:30pm. Blocking? Script Analysis? Bring your questions and get ready to learn some great tricks of the trade.

D.I.Y. Theater: Sunday May 12th from 1:00-2:30pm. Learn how to create your own pieces of theater about what matters most to you.

Workshops will be led by Lead Teaching Artist Ashley Griffin and TTSI staff. Ashley Griffin is best known as the creator of the pop-culture phenomenon "Twilight: The Unauthorized Musical Parody." She has also performed on and off Broadway as well as extensive work in film and television.
