HANS AND GRETA Comes To The Icelandic Opera This Month
The Icelandic Opera presents HANS AND GRETA, the fairy-tale opera based on the classic tale, running from November 25 to December 9.
Engelbert Humberdinck's fairy-tale opera Hansel and Gretel is based on the Grimm brothers "Hansel and Gretel" and was composed to a libretto by the composer's sister Adelheid Wette and was firstly composed as a play for the children in the family to perform. It turned out as a full-scale opera and was premiered in Weimar in December 1893 and has been performed near Christmastime ever since.
The cast includes Arnheiður Eiríksdóttir (Hans), Jóna Kolbrúnardóttir (Greta), Hildigunnur Einarsdóttir (Mother), Oddur A. Jónsson (Father), Dóra Steinunn Ármannsdóttir (The Witch), and Kristín Mantyla (Óli Lokbrá).
