He may be best known as the father of modern psychology, but did you know that Sigmund Freud also had a wicked cocaine habit? And he managed to get all of his family and friends addicted to it, actually killing his Best Friend and research partner and threatening to destroy his whole career and family.

Fresh off a sold-out Los Angeles run that extended twice, Freud on Cocaine is a hilarious fusion of farcical comedy and postmodern storytelling that sheds new light on the true story that history would rather we forget. If a man as great as Sigmund Freud, with the brain of a genius, can become an addict, anyone can.

Join Freud on this zany trip down the rabbit hole as he battles his own inner demons. A scathing indictment of Big Pharma and the lies and corruption that are the result of when capitalism and healthcare intersect, Freud on Cocaine offers that rare gem of being both outright hilarious and sneakily educational.

“This is yet another product of the feeder-system that is The OUTwright Theatre Festival,” says Rusty Tennant, Artistic Director and Founder of the festival. “We did a reading of Freud on Cocaine a couple years ago for OUTwright and the audience absolutely loved it. It's brash, fresh, and funny; just what folks need right now.”

Freud on Cocaine is the feature production of The OUTwright Theatre Festival which is celebrating 15 years as the longest running Queer theatre festival in the nation. Also, part of OUTwright 2026 will be a workshop of Sugar Hole by Amy Driesler and Virginia Baeta. And, of course, no OUTwright would be complete without our much-beloved reading series. This year's titles include: No Gods No Masters by Mikki Gillette, Shooflies by Heath Hyun Houghton, The Polyamory Play by Cosmo Reynolds, Sudden and Severe Hunger by Meg Schenk, Eyebright by Femmaeve MacQueen-Rose.

“The reading series is the foundation of OUTwright,” says Tennant. “When we started the festival 15 years ago, it all began as a series of readings of queer scripts we loved. It has since morphed into an incubator for new and emerging scripts like Freud on Cocaine, which, like many of the plays that have been part of OUTwright reading series in the past, has gone on to receive full production by Fuse and other companies across the country.”

All shows associated with OUTwright will take place at Reed College's Diver Studio Theatre. Performances run May 14 - June 7, 2026.
