DREAMS IN NIGHTMARES Opens to $6.1K Per-Screen Average in NYC Debut
The Lunette Films release will expand to Los Angeles before a nationwide rollout targeting Black audiences.
DREAMS IN NIGHTMARES, the acclaimed sophomore feature from writer-director Shatara Michelle Ford (TEST PATTERN), opened in New York City this weekend to a strong $6,124 per-screen average, playing on two screens at AMC Magic Johnson Harlem and Angelika Village East. The Lunette Films release earned an estimated $12,248.61 over its opening weekend.
The result places DREAMS IN NIGHTMARES among the stronger specialty debuts of the weekend on a per-screen basis, reflecting sustained momentum from the film's festival run and its targeted rollout in New York. Off the strength of its opening, the film expands to Los Angeles next week, opening August 28, then goes nationwide on September 4 with theaters hand-selected to reach young Black audiences across the country as part of the film's community-driven strategy.
Written and directed by Ford, DREAMS IN NIGHTMARES follows a group of queer friends in their mid-30s navigating love, identity, and belonging on a journey across the Midwestern United States. The film stars Denée Benton ('The Gilded Age'), Mars Storm Rucker, Sasha Compère, Charlie Barnett, and Jasmin Savoy Brown (TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AND CAMP MIASMA), with Regina Taylor and Robert Wisdom.
