Central Florida Voice Teacher And Author Pens New Book To Help Theatre Students Get Accepted To College

In recent years, many of the most popular theatre and musical theatre colleges have reported an increase in applicants of 300% or more, with some schools reporting an increase of 20% in 2018, over their applicant numbers from 2017 alone.

The increased competition for the coveted spots in these theatre programs has led Tim Evanicki to write "The College Audition: A Guide for High School Students Pursuing a Career in Theatre."

Evanicki, an alumnus of the Juilliard School and professional voice teacher and college audition coach in Central Florida, has been preparing students for their college auditions for 14 years. His clients have been admitted to NYU Tisch, NYU Steinhardt, Carnegie Mellon, Point Park, Baldwin Wallace, CCM, Boston Conservatory, Syracuse, Pace, and other top musical theatre programs across the country.

In an excerpt from the book, Evanicki writes: "Since the rebirth of movie musicals in the early 2000's, and television shows like 'GLEE' and 'Smash,' as well as the new "a cappella" craze brought back by 'Pitch Perfect,' the number of applicants applying to Musical Theatre programs has grown exponentially. As the programs become more competitive, the amount of work candidates need to put in to prepare has also grown."

He adds, "When I first started preparing students for college in 2004, we would record their pre-screen auditions over Thanksgiving break. Those days are gone. Last year, by mid-October, all of the audition slots were full for many of the top schools. Students need to begin preparing for their auditions by the spring of their junior year."

The book guides students and their parents through the daunting process of the college audition: from choosing a smart list of schools to audition, explaining the different types of degrees available, choosing your audition material, filming your pre-screen auditions, to finally accepting admission at the college of your choice.
