British Museum Announces this Month's Public Programme

In July 2017, the British Museum has a series of events celebrating the exhibition Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave and events part of the Shubbak Festival. There will also be a hilarious members' special event.

This award-winning animated film explores the later years of Hokusai.

O-Ei works with her father Katsushika Hokusai on his great works but has to deal with his short temper and lack of interest in worldly things such as money or society. O-Ei, however, has inherited her father's talent and it soon starts to get her into trouble.

Enjoy an evening of performances and activities celebrating the life, art and enduring legacy of Katsushika Hokusai, presented in collaboration with Japan House.

Visiting especially from Tokyo, see Chindonya, musical street entertainers employed to advertise shops and theatre performances, whose roots lie in Hokusai's late Edo-period Japan.

Hear traditional performances by tsugaru shamisen player Hibiki Ichikawa and folk singer Akari Mochizuki, as well as a performance of Ryan Probert's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji by English acoustic guitar duo Vickers-Bovey, inspired by Hokusai's prints.

The evening will also include themed craft workshops, a community-led performance by older people from Camden, film screenings of the NHK production The Lost Hokusai (2017) and a pop-up sake tasting bar.

Based on material gathered from several years of research, expert printmaker Rebecca Salter RA explains the traditional practice of Japanese woodblock making, with reference to her ongoing collaboration with Sato Woodblock workshop in Kyoto.
