Programme Introduction
From the Theatre's website: Huangmei Opera Huizhou Woman takes a prototype in real-life as the origin of thinking. By describing The Situation of 35 years of long and arduous wait of a woman, it has created a love story of a woman who "leaves white hair with my sleep". The play displays to the audience with living conditions of the women in specific time and place with the original and ecological narrative, and presents on the stage the difficult life of Huizhou women who were isolated from outside world. It also reveals journey of heart and life experience of joy and pain, desire and anxiety, preservation and perturbation and living and death of the women during waiting, which highlights the value and meaning of life.Huangmei Opera artist Han Zaifen stars in the opera and shows four steps of a woman's "marriage", "hope", "moan" and "regression", which reflects the life tragedy of women at lowest level of feudal society. Engraving-like stage art, innovative directing techniques and vivid performance of Han Zaifen makes Huizhou Woman not traditionally small, skillful, light or joyful, but deep, solemn, tear-jerking and illuminating instead with strong shocking power of arts.
