Governor General Award-nominated playwright Lisa Codrington's stage adaptation of Bernard Shaw's The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God begins previews Friday, June 10 at the Court House Theatre. Commissioned by the Shaw Festival, this world premiere is an outrageous comic tale of a young girl's quest to find God.

Ravi Jain, one of Canada's most exciting young directors, spins his celebrated theatrical magic in this provocative romp through topics deemed too taboo for polite conversation - the Bible, God, racism, slavery, colonialism, colonization, and feminism - just to name a few! All are up for grabs in this brilliantly anarchic adaptation of Bernard Shaw's controversial 1932 novella. Set and costumes by Camellia Koo, lighting by Louise Guinand and music and sound by John Gzowski create the perfect milieu for this riotous and irreverent adaptation.

Natasha Mumba is a curious young African girl abandoned by the missionary that converted her for asking too many questions about the Bible. Compelled by the phrase "seek and ye shall find", she sets out on a journey to find the one entity that can provide the answers she yearns for - God. Along the way, she meets several well-known, and not so well-known, figures from the Bible; a caravanning group of British scientists and an Irish playwright with some radical ideas.

The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God also features the talents of Guy Bannerman, Tara Rosling, Ben Sanders, Kiera Sangster, André Sills, Graeme Somerville and Jonathan Tan.

Sponsored by Vintage Hotels, this Shaw Festival production runs from June 10 to September 11 (opening June 25) at the Court House Theatre (26 Queen Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake).
