Music is in the air at the University of New Haven as the Theatre Club prepares for their third cabaret. The tradition started last Fall under the direction of Robert Vaccaro, who also directed the Spring Cabaret 'Cabaret 2: Electric Boogaloo'. I had the pleasure of speaking with the director, choreographer, and a few cast members about their experiences with Cabaret III. (more...)

BWW Review: WHITE CHRISTMAS at The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre
by Anthony Hazzard - Nov 30, 2016

The holidays came early this year to the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre in Oakdale as they present the blissful Irving Berlin tuner 'White Christmas' through December 18. This cheerful old fashioned Broadway musical is based on the classic Paramount motion picture starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye as song and dance men searching for stardom while looking for love on the way. Misunderstandings, mayhem, and mountains of mistletoe all ensure an endearing love story and the happiest holiday for all. (more...)

BWW Recap: Liza's Twisted Love Triangle Gets Even Twistier When Worlds Collide on YOUNGER
by Matt Smith - Nov 16, 2016

Wow! What a week it's been! And I'm not just talking about what you think I'm talking about. It's messy for Liza this week... made all the worse by the fact that she's essentially drugged up and knocked out while all the action's going on (so she's oblivious to basically everything). A freak accident on a MetroBike (thanks Diana!) lands her in the hospital, where hijinks ensue with Josh, Charles and yep, even, ex-husband David as worlds collide, storylines interwine, paths are crossed, meetings are made, and piggies are covered. (Don't worry... it'll all make sense once you're through with the recap/episode!) Plus, Diana has a chance encounter with a Broadway-friendly hunky hunk, and Kelsey acquires a new book for Empirical to publish...  and gets a new boyfriend, too! It's all ahead (or behind, depending on if you've seen the episode or not!) on this week's recap, so if you're intrigued... you know what to do! Thanks!!  (more...)

BWW Review: JOHN MUELLER'S WINTER DANCE PARTY Shares the Excitement of Early Roll and Roll
by Shari Barrett - Nov 16, 2016

On February 3, 1959, after performing together on the Winter Dance Party Tour, rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. 'The Big Bopper' Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. The three, together with pilot Roger Peterson who also perished, were attempting to make it to their next stop by plane rather than travel by bus during a raging snowstorm. The event later became known as 'The Day the Music Died' after singer-songwriter Don McLean so referred to it in his 1971 song 'American Pie.' And although I was too young at the time to really understand what their deaths meant to the world of early rock and roll, I certainly appreciate the music they left behind that will live on as long as others continue to spin the tunes and keep imitating these rock and roll icons onstage. BWW Review: Nothing is Off Limits for Isaac Mizrahi in Café Carlyle Debut DOES THIS SONG MAKE ME LOOK FAT?
by Troy Frisby - Feb 9, 2017

Isaac Mizrahi has a simple question to ask: Does this song make me look fat? Any variation of that prompt is normally a strong cue to walk on eggshells, but making his Cafe Carlyle debut on January 31 with a show named for and based on that query, Mizrahi took a no-holds-barred approach to the human body and just how hilarious and, at times, revolting it can be. After opening the show with a silky-smooth cover of 'Yes' (Kander & Ebb), the fashion designer-cum-cabaret singer dove in headfirst to his fascination of body horror and the body in general. When an audience member protested over the risque-for-the-room subject of 'vodka tamponing,' Mizrahi brushed it off with a sheepish, 'Oh boy, I have some racy stuff coming.' (more...)

BWW Review: Magical FINDING NEVERLAND at the Pantages
by Don Grigware - Feb 23, 2017

To say that the musical version of Finding Neverland is a real charmer is an understatement. The book by James Graham retains all of the sweetness of the 2004 film and adds on a delightful theatricality for the stage that just will not quit. One surprising element is the musical score by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy that includes some wonderfully poignant and moving ballads. With sweeping direction by Diane Paulus and a dynamite cast this national touring production is bound to please just about everyone, the young and the young at heart. It plays at the Hollywood Pantages through March 12. (more...)
